Could rash be from Daytrana? | ADHD Information

We saw the doctor again today because the rash has not gone away. He thinks it could be from a virus (Acrodermatitis), but advised we keep the patch off until it clears up. We'll try the patch again when she is all clear and I'll post our findings. Hopefully, it is not related to the patch. Thanks again.

Try looking at the pattern of the hives. If it is contact related, it will be where the contact occured (e.g. where the affected clothes touched). If it is systemic, it will be everywhere, even in the scalp.

My brother-in-law had hives due to a change in his usual laundry detergent and it affected him where his clothes touched him (but not where his underwear was ). The manufacturer made a change so the BIL had no idea this would happen. The first time I ever gave my daughter liquid motrin, she broke out head to toe (including her scalp). I gave her benedryl immediately and we drove to the ER. We do not know if it was the motrin or the dye.

vickie39105.4107291667Seems like since there were no hives near where the patch was, it probably isn't the patch, but possibly something else......Thanks to everyone who responded. I'll give you an update in a few days once I figure out what on earth is going on. Glad to hear no one else is having anything similar. Really want the patch to work!

By the way - for those with problems peeling off the patch and not tearing the adhesive - I received this email today:

Thank you for your recent inquiry regarding Daytrana. We apologize for any inconvenience that you experienced with the use of the Daytrana patch. There are
a few suggestions that we can recommend to help the protective lining of the patch come off cleanly. It is recommended when peeling back the protective
liner, the words "Daytrana" written on the patch should face away from you. The patch may also be bent slightly at the score to get it started and to peel from
the center instead of from the liner tips. It is also important to peel the patch slowly and store them at room temperature of 77 degrees F, with excursions
allowed of 59 to 86 degrees F. The active medication is evenly distributed throughout the adhesive layer of the patch. Therefore, if any part of the adhesive is missing or disturbed from the patch, Shire recommends applying a new patch on because your daughter may not be getting the full dose of the medication.

Since the med is out of her system w/in hours after the patch is removed, I would have to agree with the doctors opinions.  The fact that the hives came days after the last wearing of the patch leads me to believe that.

My son, who is not usually allergic to anything (except ragweed) broke out in hives one time due to the laundry detergent changing formulas slightly...he hasn't had a problem before that day 8 -9 years ago, nor has he since....but that day he was covered EVERYWHERE except his underwear area (I hadn't done a load of whites yet thatnk goodness).  Once I took all of the clothes out of his drawers and rinsed them thoroughly, and gave him a dose of benadryl, he was fine.

I think that it is all too easy to attribute every little thing that changes in our child to the new med, but in this case, since it had been out of her system well over 24 hours, I would say it is quite unlikely...just my opinion....

My 9 year old started Daytrana last Wednesday. Wore the patch on Wed, Thurs, Friday. Did not wear it on Saturday or Sunday. Sunday night she was covered in hives - but, there are none near her hips where she wore the patch.

Anyone experience anything similar. Her docs (Ped. and Psych) say it can't be the patch, but it is the only "new" thing she has experienced. She has never had an allergy to anything in her life.

Comments welcome. It very well could be the patch, possibly an allergy to the adhesive.Just updating you all that the rash went away (with an oral steroid) and Madi has been back on the patch all week. NO RASH.    I am guessing it was something all together different - timing just happened to be the same week we started the patch. I am awaiting word from her teacher as to how he feels it is working at school. Wanted to pass that along in case it is helpful to anyone else...My daughter and son both tried the Daytrana patch and both of them broke out where the patch was.   The patch is wonderful but i do think it's a little big.  They never broke out in hives all over, just where the patch was.  I even tried putting it on my daughter's arm to see if it made a difference and it didn't.  Good luck!!
