My son is being diagnosed still but if they determine he is ADHD, what kind of info is out there on Education Plans? He is in a private school and I know that will be harder to deal with as they do not have the resources public schools do. For instance the teacher recommends speech therapy for him yet there isn't one at the school so we have to pay out of pocket for one and to find one. Also a tutor for him as the school doesn't offer any "extra" help. We even asked for a middle school kid at daycare for him to read to and we can pay them a few dollars for 15 min of listening but they said they could not do that so my son doesn't get to his homework til 6:30 or so at night. Too late for a 1st grader who is struggling with reading and spelling. But don't know what to do as I work out of town and so does DH so cannot pick him up earlier.
From what I believe, if your child attends a private school, and qualify for services such as speech, can't they go to the public school in your town/city to recieve the services after school? Or can they be released early to be brought to the public school for the speech, etc. services again the ones they qualify for? I would call the special education department for your school district and ask them. Your son would probably qualify for summer school for help in reading and writing within the public school. My son who has an IEP would attend speech therapy during the summer so to prevent any regression. He did this for 2 summers. Your special ed. department in your hometown can answer any questions regarding services covered at THEIR expense.
I also know that some insurance companies cover speech and OT services for a certain number of visits with a copayment. You may want to call your insurance company as well!
