long but good read | ADHD Information

Hi,

I read this and was very impressed. HOWEVER, correct me if I'm wrong, but he states that less than 5% of ADHD children graduate from college. Wow, I guess I should cancel my children's college funds and look forward to lots of travelling with my husband. I find that statistic, well, astounding, because I know LOTS of people with ADHD with college educations that exceed Mr. Barkley's education (credentials). If, he is correct, I am very depressed about my childrenl's future. Sorry to mention such a depressing issue with ADHD.

I really found this article exceptional.  It did take me a while to actually read it, it is long and scientific which meant I had to be reading it during a time when I actually had no distractions and my meds were working.  But boy was it an eye opener.  I am newly diagnosed and at first it was exciting, then I was a little depressed- i never really thought of myself as "disabled", just unique... and now after thinking over it a couple of days, it is something I try to think about what it really means for my life now and trying to make it a better one.

It also gives me hope that more research is being done into understanding the actual causes in the brain for the disorder and better treatments will be around, particularly in case my son grows up to have ADHD.

The article is from the year 2000. However, Russell Barkley who has ADHD himself and both his children have it is a world renouned expert on ADHD. What he is trying to convey is that those with untreated ADHD may not meet the goal of completing their education and succeeding in life. The outcome of no treatment or ineffective treatment results in a child struggling for their entire childhood who will then turn into an adult that struggles their entire adulthood. That IMO is depressing.

Hi,

Barkley is giving a lecture next year that I will be able to attend.  I plan on asking him lots of questions. I have already started making my list.

Very well written article- it really does touch on a lot of good points.  It really explained the affects of ADHD and how ADHD works.  I found myself reading the article, nodding my head and saying "yep, thats my son!"

Great find, thanks so much for sharing it.  Everyone that has someone with ADHD should read this.

Great link! Thanks

Thanks for the link.  I am printing it now and keeping it.
