You mentioned on another thread that you used Occupational Therapy for your ADHD son.
Tell me more about this. How has it helped, What do they do in there, how did you find a place to take him? ETC>
How did you go about finding a qualified OT that specialized in ADHD?
We used Occupational therapy with our son when he was dx'd with sensory intergration disorder prior to the ADHD dx. It worked wonders we had a fantastic OT! We did all sort of things... The brushing program helped him to adjust to diffrernt types of fabrics so he would keep his clothes and socks on. We did deep pressure exercises. We did things to help his fine motor skills so that he could control a pencil a little better. We used a weighted blanket to help him sit in one place. There are so many different non-medication things that an OT can do for ADHD kids. They have special seat cushions that wiggle and swiggle when you move around in your seat. This allows the ADHD kid to sqirm without leaving their seat and being disruptive. Our OT also used figet toys. They were different little handle held things he could hold and play with, again keeping him in his seat and not distrubing others. You can PM me if you have any other questions. A great book that we found with the Out of Sync Child and the other was Activities to do with your Out of Sync child. They worked wonders!!! I am all for non-med type of things. Now we use some of the things that the OT taught us along with the meds.
We were fornate enough that they had a qualified one through the school district. But after we left that school district I started calling around and we got an evaluation done by an outside source. They were excellent also. I would start with your school if they don't provide it or your child doesn't qualify they might be able to recommend places to call.
Hi Monkeybutt,
I am sorry I haven't answered to this. We are moving out-of-state (yes, again) and we are like crazy packing. I promise to describe more about this next week.
In the meantime, I suggest you go to the Alternative & Complementary Medicine forum, and under the "Has anyone been to the DORE centers?" thread, start reading on page 9. That's where I describe in detail everything we have been doing for the past 5 months regarding the OT. That is where I usually update JP's progress and describe everything the OT has done/recommended.
Post all the questions you need and I will be very happy to asnwer in that thread. Just bear with me for a few days. My computer should be up and running by Tuesday, Jan. 30 or so.
And by all means, PM me if you like. I'm all about sharing experiences. I like to see that other people tried OT with good results
.
You may find a list of OTs at www.spdnetwork.org.
