I could get fired... | ADHD Information

Share

Hi there,

I had such a bad day at work today. I am a Claims Adjuster and I was given a written warning today stating that I have 30 days to get my desk caught up to date or I'll be fired.

I have a heavy workload and I come up with ideas as to how to manage it from time to time. I'll put them into practice and see that it's working, but yet I can't maintain it. This basically goes for every area of my life; even if I see the good in doing something I won't maintain the habit.

Why do I do this? I really need to change this.

Thanks for your help.

this is a classsic symptom of adhd.  80% of us get some or much relief when a good caring listneing doc perscribes the right choice of med.  there are many.  we are all different and complex.  it takes some experimentation for most.  they don work for me.  as to why again, as you learn more bout your symptoms and adhd it will be more understandable.

pls keep us informed

The only system that has ever worked for me is called Getting Things Done (no, I don't work for them, and you don't have to buy the book -- there are web sites that explain it pretty well). It's focus is on "what's the next ACTION" -- very concrete and good IMHO for ADHDers like me.

Wordwoman39107.5117824074How many claims do you have to get done in the 30 days? I'm sure it's do-able, just separate them according to the date they happened and get the older ones done first and out of the way. Take ricochet's great advice about the folders and putting them in a To DO ASAP file and only work on one at a time. Doing that will make it less overwhelming for you too! It's easier to maintain focus on 1 task when you only see that one task in front of you instead of the piles of stuff that needs to be done.

I used to be a Commercial Insurance P/C Sales Agent, so I totally do understand the mundane paperwork involved! I have a serious problem maintaining a 'plan' too. I believe I have either a little OCD or I've adapted the obsession to have things in it's own place in order to maintain some sanity because otherwise I'd go nuts losing things.

Good Luck and keep us posted!

Primmies,

I am so sorry that you are going through this. I was written up, by an ADD bipolar boss once, because I made a mistake on a document. It was an embarrassment issue. But I was so upset. I felt like such a failure! I am intelligent, and I was a hard worker, always ready to drop whatever I was doing to help the team. But this was such a tough time for me.

I actually ended up being fired. I felt I was going to be fired. This time it caught me off guard. In the past I always found a job before I got fired, or when I was getting bored with the job.

Don't give up. But start looking for something else. Just in case. Also, file everything in folders and put them away in a section named MUST DO ASAP. Try really hard to keep your desk clean except for each one project you work on at a time. Then, as they walk by your office, they will at least see a clean desk and you feverishly working on something. Don't pick up the next project until you are done with the first one. If you can, come early. I used to come to work an hour or two before everyone got there, to keep me from being distracted and to keep me from feeling "watched over".

I hope I am helping you. But I really did this at my office so it appeared that I was organized. Even though my brain was all over the place...they don't really see that part.

GOOD LUCK!!!!

Thanks everyone for the great advice. Especially about the folders. My problem is though, that even if I set up that system, I won't stick with it.

After a certain period of time has passed I'll just end up looking at the "To Do ASAP" folder and think to myself, "whatever". LOL Then I end up working on tasks that I feel like doing, whether they're classified as important or not instead of getting the important things out of the way first.

I'm wondering if this is really a self discipline issue???

I dunno.. I do the same thing though with certain things (like dieting) I'll set up a plan, work hard on it for 3 weeks (that seems to be my maximum limit) and then I get bored and quit. Or in the case of organizing, stop and get cluttered up again. However with work I tend to be a little more on top of it.. I guess I've trained myself to do this to not get fired. Another thing that helps me is my plastic stackable bins I have 4 of them and the top one is for things that needs to be done first.. 2nd one is for xxx. 3rd for xxx etc... Sometimes it'll get cluttered but I've done pretty good at cleaning it up once a week.
