My seven year old has been diagnosed with ADHD.  His Ped perscribed him Strattera.  He takes 60mg.  He started out 10mg and then it was increased to 25mg.  Which seemed to be effective.  Then after the holidays and school started up all his old habits were coming back, not focusing, not able to sit still, not staying on task, etc.  The doc has him to 60mg now which he takes right before bed.  I am still not seeing an improvement.  Does anyone have any suggestions.  Please, I'm trying to get my son to be successful in school and staying on track!
Hi there, my son couldn't handle strattera. He has adhhhhhhd and is better with a stimulant. My son is on concerta and guanfacine. We experienced straterra but it made my son depressed, to the point he wanted to kill himself last year at age 8.

Keep an eye on your son's moods, it will be the strattera, not your son, if you see a change. Also make sure your son is taking what is helping him be his most successful self. Stimulants seem to work for a lot people!

Thanks

Hi Andrews Mom, I'm new here but not new to this.  ADHD often goes hand in hand with other disorders so it's very possible your son has something else going on.  My son had a seizure disorder as a baby so the waters were pretty muddy tying to get him diagnosed, but I'm comfortable with what his issues are now.  In addition to ADHD he has Sensory Integration Disorder ~ he's very senstive to sight, sound, smell, touch ~ it causes him to get so overloaded that he can't sit, focus and do his work ~ which is compounded by the ADHD.

You may just want to research different learning disabilites and childhood disorders and see if any of them hit home for you ~ if any of them seem likely you can talk to your pediatrician about getting him screened and getting him the help he needs.

Good luck~!

Where do I go and how do I go about getting the evaluation?  We a psychological test done in Jan 05, she diagnosed ADHD combined but said there was not enough difference in the scores to indicate a learning disability.  His teacher is doing everything she can, but in his SST meeting they're telling me to have him keep reading, the more he reads the better he'll get.  He also need to practice his phonics and grammer.  Where am I supposed to have the time to do all this extra stuff with him.  We both work full time, we have 3 kids 7,3 1/2, and 3 months, and they go to bed by 9.  He is currently in the after school program at school from 3-5, Mon-Wed, and I have seen no improvement.  I am just so discouraged  and frustrated.  I don't know where to go to get any help.  I talked to the school last year about having him tested for LD, but they told me we had to go the SST route first, and the teacher had to have done everything possible before they would consider testing. You should also get an neuroeval done on your child as well. You are his mom and the best advocate for him. You know him better then anyone else. It true adhd does go hand in hand with other things as well. I have three boys, the oldest has tbi, add, behavior issues, mild depression. My two youngest have tbi, adhd, speech delays, emotional problems as well as behavior issues and mild depression as well. The eval will go into great detail about your child and give you information on how to school him and parent him. I am so glad we finally got it done. It took awhile a few sessions cause our sons bounce alot. But it was well worth it.Oh sorry also, being a parent of an adhd is pretty much trial and error in my mind. You have to (sometimes) keep trying different meds to find the right one for your child, its about modifications too. And even then sometimes the one that has been working good might need a change. Like my son right now who is going through puberty, the adderall xr is not working as well as it once did for him. So we now also use vitamins to help him focus. The best advice anyone can give you is Research,Research. And don't be afraid to come here and ask anything. There are tons of people here who are willing to help and know's how it is. True each child is different. But we are all parents and what the best for our childMy seven year old has been diagnosed with ADHD.

Welcome lk2002,

It may be that strattera is not the best med for your son. It is considered a second line treatment (after the stimulants) and is usually used if there is a reason the stimulant meds can't be used. Sometimes kids metabolize these meds too quickly for proper effect. Here is a med chart for the ADHD meds (it is a couple years old so does not have a couple newer meds like the Daytrana patch):

I have a 7 yr old son who was diagnosed ADHD a year ago.  He is taking Metadate CD 10mg, once per day. He has not taken Strattera (he will not swallow pills) the Metadate is a capsule that can be opened and mixed with applesauce.  It lasts approximatly 8 hours. He has greatly improved his behavior, but is still struggling with his grades.  He is an "A" student in math and a "C" student in english.  He is struggling with reading speed, phonics. grammer. comprehension, anything related to laugage arts.  We're thinking it might be a learning disability.  If anybody knows of anything that might help, please let me know.  Thanks.
