Can you become immune to the meds? | ADHD Information

I have found that a med break helps us so we don't have to increase the meds as often.  Meds will have to be checked after big changes like growth spurts or large weight gains.

Just wondering if anyone thinks this or has had it happen?

DS has been on meds for almost 4 years now.  We've tried them all and he has been on Adderall XR for about the last 2 years.  He's now at 60 mg, which is the max for a child on that med.  Thing is, I dont think it's working any more.  There was one day last week he didnt take them, and didnt tell me until the next day, and I didnt notice a difference in him at all!  And within the last 2 weeks, I've noticed his lack of focus in school has gotten worse.  I called his Dr. but he doesnt want to change his meds over the phone, and of course cant see us until Feb. 22.... Well I put in another call for him because I cant take this for another month or Im going to need meds myself!  Everyday is the constant struggle.  It took ds 2 hours to write 10 sentences the other night!  We have an appt on Feb. 8th with the psychologist, so if I cant get help until then, Im going to have him give us a new med to try....this is absurd!

I remember when ds was on concerta for a while, I felt like he became immune and we switched.  It worked, but how do they really expect him to wait an entire month when the meds take a few weeks to work in your system anyhow???

I was just on the phone with my ds doctor this week asking the same questions.  He said that they build up a tolerance to the meds.  And every so often they need to be tweaked.  Our dr is great about changing meds with just a phone call as long as we keep our every 2 month appointment.  He gave us a new rx for Ritalin LA eariler this week. I called today and told him that he couldn't sleep with the new meds and he called in something to help him sleep.

I too am like you...if they don't fix the meds for him.. they better start prescribing them for me because I get to the point where I just can't take it any more.

I would get another Dr.!! Altho my son has switched from Ritalin to Concerta to Ritalin LA over the last ten years, his dose has essentially been the same for the last seven and a half.

In sixth adn seventh grade he needed an increase in the spring.  Later we would drop it down again.  The pharmacist said that she noticed Ritalin doses were often increased in the spring.

The Dr. did call me back yesterday and I told him I could not wait another month. We decided to try him on the Concerta again for 30 days until our next appt. and see where we go from there.  Hopefully we will notice some change.

My son is on concerta and at first moved up VERY quickly. We would change dosages within 24-48 hours. I would never wait a month on a med needing a dosage increase. My doc. would write it, and I would pick it up and fill it immediately. You and teachers will know when they are at the correct dosage. My son also takes guanfacine for overstimulation. It really helps, as much as the concerta to him having a successful day!
