i agree with the other's 18 mg. is very low. I don't think we lasted more than a day at that level. My son took 6 months to level off at 72 mg. of concerta. He is now 9 and has been at that level for just over 2 yrs. He is also on guanfacine and sees a psychopharmacologist for his medications. The doctor really knows his meds and how to help!My son tried most all of the stimulants with the exception being Metadate CD.  After a year and a  half of medication trials the winner hands down is Adderall.  My son is able to focus on his school.  He completes assignments and recieves no special accomodations or modifications.  Welcome to the board!  Every child is different for instance my child has moderate to severe and inattentiveness, and ODD and is being re-screened for OCD and she takes Ritalin LA 10 Mg for now and is doing awsome for the most part behaviorally a nightmare the past week for us no one else.  It is hard for parents to see their children suffer I try to take things one day at time and pray.  But yes it is not easy. Welcome to the board. Sometimes, it takes a while to find the right dosage and/or med. Be prepared for it to take some months. Perhaps 18mg isn't a high enough dose. Our dd takes guanfacine, and I think it makes a huge difference for her. Good luck!

We are new to this but we don't know what to do and cannot find a local support group.  Our son was diagnosised with ADHD and ODD last year.  We tried A LOT of different things before we finally gave in the medicine.  He has done okay with that and we notice a difference at the beginning of each med but then it seems not to work anymore.  He is on Concerta 18 mg now and I am going to ask our doctor to add the guanfacine.  Our frustration with him is his inablility to focus and sit still.  We have finally found a good therapist and have started taking him there.  Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get him to focus.  It is sooooooo frustrating to see him "mental" being all over the place and not being able to help him get out of it. (I hope you know what I mean).

Welcome!

I know the feeling.  It is so hard and frustrating.  My son could walk on water sometimes and people with something wrong with it because he is labled and since he has a unique name, sometimes his reputation proceeds him- oh yeah, I've heard about that kid    Hang in there.  Hopefully you will find something that works.

My son is now taking Risperdal only.  But he is not true ADHD.  He just shows the symptoms/behaviors.

My daughter took concerta and guanfacine until recently. We are now trying the guanfacine alone with good results.

18mg of concerta is very low. While looking for the right dose, my daughter started on 18mg and had some improvement, which disapeared in a week. She was increased to 27mg and did well, but not quite well enough. Because of weight loss, the doctor was reluctant to increase the concerta further, so he added the guanfacine which is a good combo. I just wonder if 18 of concerta is too low, and would make sure it is at the correct dose before adding another med.
