Oh the magic of a diagnosis! | ADHD Information
Parent teacher conferences went better than I expected, I think. (no I wasn't being mean- I think we're all frustrated but trying our darndest) I had been feeling like we were being blown off, and that not a lot was being done to modify things for dd, even though she clearly was struggling more than her peers in different areas. (organization and focus, to name a few!!) It's not a public school, and I was about ready to jump ship and try a fresh start somewhere else. Earlier this week we sent the doctor's report that said it actually was ADHD. We had been scheduled for a short session with each of her two main teachers, but got there and found they had changed the game plan and ALL of us were going to meet together for the entire time. (something I had asked for several times this year but never worked out). This told me they were on a new mindset, a little more serious about dealing with this, and possibly more ready to help. The meeting went pretty good I think. Only one of us cried. Although I think I may have gotten one of the teachers close to it (no, I wasn't being mean. I think we're all frustrated and trying our darndest). One teacher does seem to feel a little that some of it is dds willingness to work (e.g. taking so long to finish simple sentence writing worksheets because she just doesn't want to write sentences), but I'm not sure I agree. I didn't share everything I had wanted to, but both teachers seem like they really do want to help, now that they know what is going on. They may not know exactly what to do (any help on that part from you guys would be appreciated!) but one said they'd keep working and anything we thought would help they'd be willing to try. They started having her run her assignments past the teacher PRIOR to turning them in, in order to make sure they are FINISHED before she turns them in. i guess that's improving, but I was thinking of offering some sort of reward system at home if she gets a certain percentage of assignments finished before turning them in each week. I think we're going to buy about 50 pencils and have DH sharpen them every night when he picks her up from school, as that seems to be a big distraction from school work. So, we'll hang in here for a while and give them a little more chance. It just hurts that school seems to be such a struggle for her, when I feel like she's so bright.
