I found that once I started putting the water into water bottles with the sport top, the kids drank more. Also when I got one of those water coolers...you know where you put the 5 gallon bottle in upside down, and the water comes out a spigot REALLY cold? They will go and fill their bottles a lot more and drink it....
I have taken to having Chase drink a full 8-10 ounce bottle of water 1/2 hour before he goes to bed each night. This cuts down on his acid reflux, and hydrates him as well. He kinda argues, but the one night that I relented, and did not make him drink it, he got sick (his acid reflux response) during the night, so he no longer puts up too much of a fight!
Does anyone know about if the brat diet actually can cause constipation?
I know the brat diet when my son was severly dehydrated from diahreah sp?
bananas, rice, applesauce, toast
these things are suppose to stop diahreah so I wonder if they can cause constipation if taken alot?
I would assume so, since the purpose of putting a child on that mix of foods is to firm things up. I would also imagine that the same foods would be totally fine if they are taken as part of an overall diet- that is to say if they are not the only foods being eaten.
Whenever I have to use the BRAT diet, I try to stick to those foods alone, until the problem is cleared up.
I think as long as other foods are being eaten, things should be fine.
Drinking more water can help with constipation. maybe buy a really cool water bottle for him. Or even let him pick one out!! This along with the fiber can help. Also a good multi can help! Or some quality Alovara juice! It can taste funny. I buy the strawberry kiwi from market America. And we mix it in The same flavor juice.
I don't like using stool sorteners for long periods. It can make those muscels in the colon lazy and result with further problems.
Your best bet for immidiate resuls would be the fiber powder and good old H2o. I have read that a lack of water in the body can cause constipation because it pulls it from else where. Like from the colon! The vitimins and alo would help with future episodes, before they get to bad!! Hope this helps!!
Thanks Edbson! The medication that he is on is Concerta 27mg, but from what I understand this can be a side effect from most of the medications because his appetite is not what it used to be he doesn't eat as much therefore I think maybe that could be some of it.Applesauce, it mixes well with applesauce. my 2yo neice has issues with constipation........always has and it works for us.
What med is he on? I would speak to the Psychiatrist about it as this is not a desirable side effect.
My 4 1/2yr. old ds is having very hard stools due to his medication. It has gotten to the point where they are so hard that he is tearing himself. Does anyone have any advise on a way of helping making the stools a little softer without going to the extreme in the other direction. My doctor has prescribed a laxative and of course it works but a little to well. He will pass gas and will have an accident. This is a very uncomfortable subject but is a fact that I am learning is one of the side effects of the medication. I was wondering if anyone had a suggestion beside water which he gets all the time and juice which has tons of sugar and we all know how that effects a child with ADHD, that I possibly could give as a everyday prevention so it don't get to the point where it is so hard.
Thanks everyone!
Have you heard of that fiber sure powder? It is advertised on the TV as being tasteless and can be mixed into anything that you eat or drink to get more fiber into a person's diet. I would think that would work if you are unable to get fiber into his diet any other way, like raw fruits, and vegetables, whole wheat breads, etc.
Thanks Chase's Mom! I will look into that. My son is a very pickey eater. Unfortunanly the only fruits I can get him to eat are bananas and apples and as far as veggies go well he is 4 so you can imagine. Thanks again!!
They say that it is even tasteless in water, so you ought to be able to mix it into juice, or mac and cheese or whatever he does eat. and don't give up, my Chase at age 4 did not like many things, and now he is a much more adventurous eater. At 4, he would not even look at anything with pasta, and now he devours it! Just keep offering it, and encouraging him to taste, and hopefully it will come with time.
You can also disguise veggies in spaghetti sauce (by blending them up finely), and I just bet if you add juiced carrots into his juice w/o him seeing, he won't notice at all.
Speaking of that, have you tried the V-8 splash juices? My boys both love it, and it has veggies and fruit in it, but they just like the flavor...it comes in berry blend,(their favorite) and a few others too. My 13 year old says he cannot taste any veggies at all, just fruit. It may be worth a try.
