After reading the long post on daytrana I am believing I want my son to try it. I just received the diagnose yesterday and am waiting for his pdoc to call me for meds.
I have a question about the soreness, rash etc. Has anyone ever tried to take their child off it on weekends? I am wondering if I can put my son on it for school as I want him to do so well but if he is left with sores all over him, maybe over the weekend I can deal with the issues so he has time to heal for Monday again? Has anyone else done this?
Most docs like to start with the med 7 days a week until you get to the right dose and have stabilized everything. Then you taylor the med to the child's needs. This could include stopping on weekends for eating or skin (in the case of daytrana) issues. Not everyone has skin irritation due to the adhesive of the patch.
You will need to see what final dose your son ends up with and any side effects. A very low dose is easy to start and stop. A higher dose might be hard on your son when first starting up each time after a break. You will need to try it out and see how things go.
My dd only uses daytrana on school days, not holidays or weekends. We have had NO rashes, sores, itching or any of the other complaints, noyt every person using it has these problems( and dd has severe eczema and is allergic to EVERYTHING).
I would speak to your psych and find out how long they want you to use it before taking weekend breaks. For some kids stopping on weekends is like starting over from the beginning.
Definitely ask your doc these very important questions. We do have skin problems and there are times that ds wears his patch on the weekend. We usually put one on him for church. We noticed over christmas break (he did not wear one) that when we put a patch on him the first day after, he was REALLY quiet, so WE decided not to go that long without the talking to the doctor. Good luck and remember. Everyone is different+Add affects all areas of life, not just school. I would recommend asking your doc for focalin or something of that sort to give to him on the weekend, to let the rashes heal.
