From Metadate to the patch?? | ADHD Information

I HAVE A 7 YR OLD BOY WHO IS ON METADATE CD 10MG.  I ASKED THE DR ABOUT THE PATCH BECAUSE HE HATES TO TAKE THE PILL (I HAVE TO SPRINKLE IT ON ICE CREAM).  DR SAID SHE DID NOT KNOW OF ANYONE IN THE AREA THAT PRESCRIBES IT, I'M IN GA.  I THOUGHT IT MIGHT LAST LONGER THAN THE METADATE, HIS WEARS OF ABOUT 4 PM.  THEN WE HAVE HOMEWORK HASSELS EVERY NIGHT. ANY SUGGESTIONS.Tell your Psych you want to try it, read up on it and go in well informed.His pediatrician prescribes his meds would that make a difference?  Thanks.My DD went from Metadate to the Daytrana Patch about a year ago, and they are the Same med. Methylphenidate, just in a different form. We have had better luck with the patch than most, and I hope she continues to do well on it.it is the best med so far!We switched my son from ritalin la to the patch as soon as it came out.  I love it and he likes it too.  He hates the actual patch but loves the fact that he doesn't have to take a pill except on special days when we need more than nine hours.  I have to say he had been on 30mg from the start but just today we reduced it to 20 will have to see how that works.  But the only thing is with the 30 we never had trouble getting the backing off the patch but this morning was a booger so now i understand what people were griping about.  Hopefull tomorrow he will wind up with more med on the part that actually goes on his body that on the backing that gets thrown in the trash.  lol  The only other issue we have had is sometimes his skin is red after taking it off, we use eucerin cream or cutemol cream at night after he soaks in soapy water to remove whats left behind and so for that has worked great.  I asked him if he wanted to switch back to the pill because of his irritated skin issues but he says no way he likes the patch much better.  SO DO I

I don't think Tyler will understand that the patch will be easier then the pill because of his ASD (Autistc spectrum disorder). I guess I should wait for the DR.  to come up with a plan. I just can't imagin what the DR is going to do for him. I never wanted to get medication in him so badly but I think that it is going to help him focus. He is not hyper at all, just very easly distracted. I hope someone out there has some experence with this same problem. Thanks again.

 i am in the u.k , we  do not have it here,and i would like to know more methelphenidate is not licenced for adults yet in u.k.

We switched from Metadate to the patch for about 4 days.  It worked as well as the Metadate and was longer lasting.  My son had issues applying and taking it off and I had issues with the 2 hours it took to kick in.

So we stopped and are back on the Metadate and a short dose in the afternoon of Ritalin. The good thing is that Will complained about having to take the pill but hated the patch so much, that he no longer complains about it.

My other son, is like yours when it comes to meds.. He gags on everything too.  The last time he was sick, the dr gave him a chewable and told him it was either that or a shot for 3 days to rid him of his infection..

Has anyone had their child on Metadate then switched to the patch??

 My son is 6 1/2 and was told he was ADD at 5. Dr gave him Metadate, but he has sensory issues and it is very hard for me to get it in him. No matter how hard I try to hide it. So I cant say if this medication ever worked and I gave up. Seems  like he is having a harder time this year and the teacher recommened I try again, but I know he will not take it by mouth. He also  was dignosed with pdd-nos at 2 1/2 so it is hard for him to understand that if he takes this he will feel better. He always seem to figure it out when I try to hide it in food or drink  and then he wont eat that food/drink ever again. He has a very limited menu as it is. This kid will vomit even when I give him Tylenol.  Thank God he does not get sick very often. My question is. We are goin to the dr (nero) in March but I was wondering if anyone knows if the patch and metadate is on the same family  of drugs? and any other suggestions in trying to get medication in him.
