How long to find right meds? | ADHD Information

I was told there was no perfect science unfortunetly all we have is to keep trying.

My son is on his fourth day of adderall.  It seems in the evening,  he is unbearable.  He is mean and irritable.  He has never been this way before. Always in a good mood. Does this wear off?

Any advice on anything??  Im trying to help him so much at school but would also like to enjoy my son when he gets home....

It might be the Adderall. It made ds irritable as well. I know of 2 other
young boys that had the same problem with Adderall. They were not
themselves and mean. They are both doing well with Focalin and are
normally really sweet kids and generally well behaved. DS lasted about 2-3
days on Adderall. I would try something else. Many children have problems with "rebound" which ds displayed as a higher level of activity after the Ritalin wore off than he was normally.  "Mean and irritable " is different and is good information to bring up with your doctor. jfla239130.3190856481

Hello all,

I'm fairly new and am so glad to have this support available.  I just need to make sure I carve out time for this!  I'm feeling burned out and wanting to throw my hands in the air!  After putting our daughter on meds in August, I thought we had the right dosage and type 3 weeks ago.  Now she is having the extreme moodiness (went from 10mg to 15 mg of Adderall XR) and meltdowns like she did on the Ritalin.  Then, last night after her conference, the teachers say her attention is at an all time low???  Waiting to discuss this with the pediatrician, but would love some insight.  The teacher discussed this with the Director of Early Childhood at her school and other teachers.  From their experience, they didn't think time released meds worked well with young children (PL is 6 in Kindergarten).  I'm at an all time low.  I just thought that this reporting period would be a lot better because of the meds . . . but it is not.  Thanks for listening and I would love any feedback!

It took us several medications to get to one that worked. We just
switched again 2 weeks ago to Daytrana from Focalin. Hang in there. It
will get better. Our ds is 6 and in Kindergarten. We started meds for him
in PreK last year. He had meltdowns with Concerta. Was not himself and
very moody with Adderall (usually a sweet boy). He metabolizes his meds
so fast that Focalin XR lasted only half the time that it should have.
Focalin (short-acting) was great, but lasted 3 hours and he had to take it
4 times per day. Daytrana has been great (so far). I am sure that we will
have changes again at some point, but we have to go with what works for
now and see how it goes. I really don't like dealing with medications and
always wish that we didn't have these issues. As I have come to realize, if
it wasn't this ADHD, it would probably be something else. I am counting
my blessings that I have a smart and bright little boy that is very happy
and loves school and his friends. Hang in there. It will work out! As
someone told me "You can't stop the waves, but you can learn how to
surf". I guess I'm learning.
