Here are articles on time managment, test taking strategies, etc:

It would be advisable to implement these things first and see if meds can be reduced or eliminated (see if maturity has lessened the need for meds), but not stop meds outright. There is also a good article meds for kids to read here:

I hope this is helpful.

vickie39132.9141203704I am sorry I didnt even think about details.  He has anger managment .  His younger brother has hyperactive but never needed medication and hopefully wont.  He isnt looking to just drop meds right now.  He just expressed that one of his long term goals for his life was to do so.  Why exactly he feels he wants no meds are not exactly known to me.  I got the feeling it had to do with two things.  One being worry that it will hinder him in the future and the other being a very negative grandmother who often says the boys have no idea how to behave.  Thanks again any who can help.  I appreciate the link to web sites and would love a book or two i could send her as a gift.  Shes important to me and I hate when she feels helpless about something so important.

Dr. Russell Barkley has a good book on ADHD with great explanations:

and his site is full of scientific articles and information:

I dont have any children of my own but I am the godmother to a wonderful 12 year old who has ADHD.  Today his mother meantioned to me that he has expressed a desire to find a way to do without his medication.  She was frustrated that she didnt even know where to begin to find out how to go about accomplishing that.  I was thinking about it and i thought maybe I could find some books to send her or maybe a good web site or two?  I do know it needs to be something that wont make her feel guilty for turning to the medication when he was younger and I would like something he might be able to look at too.  Maybe give him a sense of control over his own condition?  Anyway any suggestions all of you have would be greatly appreciated.

Which kind of ADHD does he have?  Is it mainly inattentive or mainly hyperactive or a combo of the 2?

As children grow and mature, sometimes the symptoms do get better, but age 12 is probably a little young....I would say that if he could get hyperorganized, and obtain accommodations at school (in writing) he may be able, with tons of hard work, to go un medicated.

Can you tell me why he wants to go w/o meds now?  Is the med making him feel strange, side effects to much?  I am just curious.
