Methylphenidate and vasopressine hormone | ADHD Information
For 2 months now, I've been trying different Ritalin/Concerta and food combinations. One thing is now quite sure and evidence for it is provided in form of results of hormone related test. For me, atleast, Ritalin and Concerta will affect my
vasopressin hormone levels (so-called "water hormone") and
plasma osmolality. But only in medium to high doses.
Few facts (from Wikipedia):
- low vasopressin levels = decrease in water reabsorption by the kidneys (higher urine output)
- body low in water = high plasma osmolality levels
Things to note:
- levels will return back to normal soon after medicine have run out (or in 24 hours atleast, if no new dose has been taken)
- temporary medicine inefficiency correlates to this "water issue", meaning that, with low doses there are no feelings of continuous thirst and with higher doses (and feelings of continuous thirst, for example) medicine's positive effects are all gone
- certain causality can be seen with this issue, meaning that if I keep taking Ritalin with medium sized doses for few days, medicine will become almost inefficient, but only temporarily
Symptoms, which appear with "too high" doses:
* continuous thirst
* higher urine output (looks clear, not yellow)
* more sweating
* skin becomes more dry
* mouth feels dry
* loss of appetite
* feelings of tingling in head and lungs (or somewhere there)
* dry eyes
* moderate confusion, thinking becomes a bit harder, slight increase in fumbling

Test was made 3 hours after taking 2x18 mg of Concerta.
S-K = kalium
S-Na = natrium
S-Osmol = plasma osmolality
P-ADH = vasopressin
a) kalium and natrium levels were ok
b) normally levels for vasopressin level is below 2 ng/l, when plasma osmolality level is below 284 mosm/kg
c) normally levels for vasopressin level is between 2.0-11.0 ng/l, when plasma osmolality level is between 284-300 mosm/kg
d) my vasopressin level was 0.9 ng/l and plasma osmolality 306 mosm/kg, and that's awfully wrong
e) my vasopressin level should be something like 13-14 ng/l, when plasma osmolality were that high
f) basically, my body wanted lots of water, but at the same it was outputting water already in my body, making me feel very thirsty and urinate a lot more than usually
g) but like said, it all started to its return back to normal, when methylphenidate run out from my body

To me, Ritalin is almost perfect medicine. It has zero side effects, if this "water thing" isn't counted.

Bottom notes.
I have quite strong feeling that this issue has something to do with food also, meaning that, when I make certain changes in my daily food intake, I can use higher doses of Ritalin, for longer time. Yet, I can't be spesific enough to define the names of foods in question. Just a guess, but it might have something to do with protein and/or essential fatty acids.
This issue have made me wonder, how does Ritalin/Concerta actually work in reality. Does it really affect only proposes target pathways of dopamine, norepinephrine and serotonin, or just dopamine like some sources of information claim. Could it somehow affect
hypothalamus also? Just a wild guess at this moment.
