Problems with meds | ADHD Information

I was always told there is no perfect science to all of this it is a trial and error unfortunetly.  I wish i had something better to add.  I agree with ebson to try to keep the same just change the dosage. Some kids metabolize meds very quickly and that can really mess with getting to effective treatment. You might ask the doc to add guanfacine. It can augment the stimulant, ease the period meds are leaving the body and can be quite helpful when meds are not in the system. I saw on another thread you are having sleep issues as well. Guanfacine may help in this area as well. It might be worth discussing with the doc.It seems that every time we find a med that works and a dose and time that works it only stays that way for about a month.  So about once a month we are callling the dr. and saying this isn't working any longer .  I know that meds need to be adjusted and their bodies are changing and growing, but it just seems like once a month is getting a little ridiclous!  When we do find something that is working it works great but only for a short time.  Anyone else have this problem?Instead of changing meds try adjusting dosages. That has always worked for us,and dd has been on the same meds for a year or so now, same dose even. When you find the right meds you will not have to adjust as much.We started with the regular ritalin and it worked great but didn't last long enough.  We tried several different doses and times the med was given.  Now we are Ritalin LA which is basically the same thing but time released.  We love how it works when it is working but when it is not working...watch out

It could be that you just don't have the right dose.  As we were first starting meds, a certain dose would work well for about 3-4 weeks, and then overnight, it would suddenly stop working like he wasn't on meds at all.  Our psych said that if it is not the proper dose, it will work for a short time, and then won't be enough.

Good luck!!  We have had to increase our dosage several times since we started in October.

We have also had that problem with Ty when he was taking the oral medications because his metabolism is just so fast.  We were able to stay on the Ritalin La 30mg for quite some time but did eventually have to add a short acting focalin 5 to get through the rest of the day.  Our pedi said this is normal for kids with fast acting metabolisms.
