time to throw in the towel | ADHD Information

Stuff to consider before giving up:

Have you discussed this with your doctor? You should have clear and attainable treatment goals laid out at the beginning of treatment. Are you confident that your doc has managed the med journey in a way to provide you with the best odds for success? Would you benefit from ADHD coaching or counseling as part of your overall treatment? Will you regret giving up?

Can you get some benefit without getting all the way to "normal"? What were the people around saying, did they also think the meds quit working? Some people cannot tell any benefits while those around them see the person as steadier, not so scattered, not so emotionally labile, etc.

Insulin for diabetics does not make them "normal". It does make them better (just not all the way).

becareful throwing in the towel.  some people have adverse reactions to stopping the meds right away.

I hope you do talk to your dr.  there are lots of options, that can help you feel better.

It sounds like you might have mistaken the initial euphoria created by taking ADD meds as the inficator that "it's working." That feeling is a side-effect and is not intended to be anything but a side-effect.

To know if your meds are working you need to track your ability to get tasks done, maintain adequate levels of attention and the ability to understand and manage personal behaviors. Whether you feel happy, sad, angry, etc, doesn't matter.

Also, if you are not already, you should consider seeing a pysch or a therapist. There are a variety of things that can affect how well your meds perform (e.g.,  depression, anxiety, etc.)

Best of luck to you.

Fortunately for people suffering with mental health conditions is that as time increases so does the treatment options.

I would definitely not throw in the towel. Maybe the doctor you are seeing right now is not the right one for you. I am sure there are many more doctors in your area that you could see.

Before just giving up, I would recommend getting the opinion of a few more psychiatrists and psychologists.  Different doctors may offer you different treatment options.

Maybe you are under-medicated, maybe you are over-medicated, maybe you are on the wrong medication. There are plenty of variables that could be the cause of some of your issues. Good luck with everything.
i was diagnosed with add/adhd whatever you want to call it like 5 years ago. i was put on ritalin and effexor and it was like living for the first time instead of existing. slowly the med effects wore off and i tried other meds to try to get that feeling like everyone else was feeling back which i experienced at the beginning of treatment. since then ive tried every med with the possibility of helping but never getting then result of feeling normal which i so desired. i feel guilty about throwing in the towel but i find solace in the fact that i tried my best and i know god knows i did as well. ryno39137.1615625
