smoking....again | ADHD Information

i know how you feel . Mine quit for 3 years and started again. How dumb is that ?

He did not like Adderall XR because it was too up and down emotionally. So, now he is taking Adderall three times a day. He says the ups and downs are much better but still has weird feelings.

He realizes that smoking is dumb but ........

I really wonder if the meds do not have something to do with it. He is going to make another Dr. appointment. Honestly, he and I are both weary of his Dr. She hands out meds like candy and really does not have any ideas expect to write different prescriptions.

Hopefully, someone can help me on here.

My husband has smoked off and on for the 15 yrs. Stops for a year and then picks it back up....3 mths...7 mths... The Dr. says he self medicated with cigs. With meds, he should not have to.

He recently started taking Adderall. Now, he is back to smoking. And he is coming home everyday wanting to have a beer to two. Now, I don't have a problem with the beers (although this is totally unlike him).

But the smoking is killing me. My kids 9,11,14 are going to be absolutely crushed. They are older now and they know the health risks. He stopped in Sept and is starting to pick them up again. They don't know yet.

I am so upset. First because he hides it. Even though I ask...he lies and says no.

Adderall is an appitite supressent. Some of his smoking could be because his body is hungry. He doesn't know he is hungry so he subconciously craves cigarettes to stave off the hunger he has but doesn't feel.

Also, see if his doctor will prescribe Wellbutrin for a little bit. If I am not mistaken Wellbutrin is also prescribed under another name to help people stop smoking (except insurance doesn't cover it for quiting smoking), and it lowers anxiety. Lowered anxiety by nature would also help quit.

I recently had my Adderall dosage increased, and I have to watch my smoking and remember to eat sometimes.

All you can do is talk to him and also demand that he smokes outside if he just has to smoke. You can't change someone who's not willing to change. Sounds like the meds are not working and he should also have that checked out too.  I have a short butt.

Good call Vickie. I never considered that connection.

Nanannan, I have no rear end to speak of. As someone once said to me "You don't have enough ass to break your neck if someone hung you."

Sometimes the meds can increase anxiety. Increased anxiety can cause a person to gravitate towards the "comfort" that smoking can provide, especially if appetite is suppressed and the person is not heading to food. To Parduse -- Short butt??[QUOTE=Parduse]

I just started taking Adderall XR (20 mg once a day) and it makes me smoke more than I have ever smoked in my life..been smoking about 8 or 9 years. I was just thinking...maybe you are right about th being hungry thing. I ate about a half hour ago (I have to force myself to eat at least once a day or I get light headed) and I don't really have a craving for a cigarette. It's so bad sometimes that I want to light another off the one I am smoking at the time!!

Hello everybody who posted on smoking.  Here is my story -- I am 79 y/o, retired woman, smoked for over 60 years.  Last year, just before Thanksgiving, I began having trouble breathing so my daughter took me to the ER.  They determined that I had an upper respiratory infection, admitted me to the hospital and started antibiotics and oxygen.  The doctor kept me in there for a week and when he discharged me, he told me that I would have to be on oxygen when I got home.  I couldn't believe all the oxygen equipment that was brought to my apartment - I had to walk around with those little tubes in my nose which were attached to an oxygen concentrator by a 50' hose.  I was given big tanks of oxygen that I would have to take with me wherever I went.  I'm sure you can imagine this scene. It has been two months since and I am off oxygen finally!  So, my smoking friends, if you don't want to be dragging a tank of oxygen around with a hose up your nose, keep on puffing.

I understand how extremely difficult it is to stop smoking - I go nuts now and then thinking about puffing on a cigarette with a cup of coffee in the morning, but I also think of the consequences - I sure don't want to be hooked up to oxygen again.  I have anot had a cigarette for almost four months, am feeling good, don't smell like stale cigarette smoke, and I can BREATHE!!!  It took this bad experience to cure me -- I'll never smoke again.  Nanannan

I was so addicted that I was picking cig.butts out of the garbage can.
Then I knew it was time to quit !! To Worldisround -- me too, and also have taken very short butts out of the ash tray and stuck a bobby pin through it so I could smoke it.  Yuk!
