New Mom to ADHD/GAD | ADHD Information

Hi everyone,

My 6 yo son was recently diagnosed with ADHD (predominately
hyperactive) and GAD. He was diagnosed after extensive
neuropyschological testing, but in my heart I just knew he had it.

We are now seeing a behavioral pediatrician that specializes in ADHD
and she has put him on 18mg of Concerta. I was just wondering
how long it took for other parents to see changes in their kids. I forgot to
ask and he took his first dose today. I realize that some kids just don't
respond, but i am hoping he will.

Thank you for any input that you can give me.

Thank you for your input...he also has generalized anxiety disorder. His
doctor wants to try treat the ADHD first and then see how his anxiety is.
She feels his anxiety is heightened by the ADHD. So new myself to all of
this, that I am just going along to see how it goes.

Thanks

Oh now I feel dumb...I should have been able to figure that one out

That is often the case, that once the ADHD is under control, the anxiety symptoms lessen.

You have come to the right place.  Ask away, someone is sure to be able to give some insight to whatever your dilemma is....we were all once new to this, and can so totally relate!

18mg is the lowest dose of Concerta.  When my son was on it, neither I nor the teachers saw a huge difference.  My son is the inattentive type...he ended up on 54mg and did quite well on it, except for appetite issues, for almost a year.  We switched to ritalin LA and we both like it much better because it does not last as long, and he is hungry by dinner time.  If he was the hyperactive type...I would probably want it to last into the evening.

Can I ask what GAD is?  I am clueless, but it may just be I have not heard of it....

The doctor should titrate the dose upwards until you see lasting results.

Good luck and welcome to the board!

If you have the correct dose you should see changes within a hour of taking the medication.  Let us know how he is doing.
