Teaching child to swallow pills | ADHD Information

My 4 year old can swallow a pill, I just place it very far back on her tongue, almost to where she gags, then give her a drink and tell her to take a big gulp.  She gets it down every time.

hi hay

well i can understand ur problem as i m going through the same with my child well i want to tell u insted of trying pills go for the sound therapy-sonic therapy for ur child treatment as far as ADHD is cocern well u can lot of article and related products on the link that i had mention here

wish u all a good health

So far, we've had good luck getting DD (who's 6 1/2) to swallow pills in a spoonful of ice cream. She actually looks forward to it because she gets ice cream with breakfast every day.

I think that adderall can be sprinkled too....

The pudding trick worked for Chase before he learned to swallow pills as well....a heaping spoonful of yogurt works well too, and if you are worried about nutrition, that is better than pudding, which I agree is not that bad.....

My 8 yr old can't swallow pills either, he takes Metadate CD 10mg in the mornings.  It's a small capsule that can be sprinkled.  He takes it about 7:30 and it wears off about 4:00.  Have you tried the Metadate CD?  It's a long acting form of the same medicine in Ritalin.  Hope this help a little.

We did the same thing as Justinsmommy except chocolate ice cream seemed to work.  He loved that spoon of ice cream for "breakfast."  He is 11 now and can swallow them with nothing...not even water.  YUCK!

Hi,

I have a 8 yr old son that is ADHD, he was originally on 10 mg of Focalin xr, and now on 20, its starting to not work again, I am getting so frustrated, anyway that is another issue!..The only reason we are on Focalin is because he can't swallow pills and that one you can sprinkle on yogart, which is a hassle every morning.  We tried the patch , but it doesn't work well for my son for some reason.  We have tried to teach him to swallow pills because I am sure there might be another drug out there that would work longer for him, but we are pretty much stuck with focalin.. i like it, but now its not working as well, wears off earlier than it used to.. We have tried having him practice with tic tacs, he just doesn't get it.. how did you guys get your kids to swallow pills?

Thanks , sorry to ramble on

I put my 5 year old son's concerta (also the size of tic tacs) buried in a spoonful of pudding (the chilled snack pack kind) and had some kind of drink waiting immediately.  I tell him "now remember, don't chew just swallow and then he takes a quick drink to get it all down and then I let him finish off the pudding cup (it can't be any worse than eating a poptart - calorie and nutrition wise, actually it's probably better).  So far this has worked for the first two weeks he's been having to take the concerta.

wow liquid methylphedinate...........great! I've mentioned in a couple of other threads that CVS and other places sell a cup specifically for pill taking.  It's or , so no big investment.  It has a special spot where you put the pill, and then you just drink regularly and the pill slides down the throat.  I don't know if there's anything special about this cup or it just gave my child the confidence to swallow a pill, but this is how he finally learned to swallow a pill.  I think the brand is EZYDose. We used mandarin oranges out of a can and hid the pill inside. It worked like a charm!

HAY4943,

My 8 yr old adhd son has been on progessively higher doses of focalin (now 30mg) for 1 1/2 years. we are very happy with it, except for the fights we have taking the meds in the morning.

I mix his with a little chocolate icing, enough to make it stick together and on the spoon. then the battle begins.... the rule is that he has to take it before leaving the house - not in the car or at school where he will just spit it out. he always ends up taking it, but the few minutes leading up to it are hell, ususally ending with me screaming in some sort of horrendous tone of voice that would make my great aunt helen rise from the grave!

that is on school days when i can threaten him with no gym or lunch detention (i am also the school secretary). on weekends or holidays, it becomes even more of a challenge. i wish i knew some other way.

if our house is like yours, when the meds wear off  in the evening around 7-8pm, the house becomes a battle zone - a battle of the wills, that is. he becomes more aggressive and defiant and oppositional. his psych suggested risperadol and we have been using it for a few days. the response is mixed and inconsistent. she said that we could look for a more compliant and agreeable child, but he still has his moments. I have to remind myself that ALL  8 year old boys have their moments and not be too hard on him. we will see....

as for the meds - he is taking only .5mg of the risperadol and it comes in a tablet that melts on the tongue. he loves it and actually begs me for it in the evening. if only they could do the same with the other meds. pharmacutical companies - are you listening??

good luck with your boy and God bless you. if someone has any ideas, please share.

  Janesgirl,

HI  Thanks for your post.. your house sounds very similar to mine.. its such a battle in the mornings.. this morning he actually hid his meds so I couldn't find them for more than an hour..

Since I originally posted this topic we have switched to Adderal xr.. it does seem to be working better.. he eats better with it and the time when it wears off isn't as bad as it was with focalin.  My dr said that in June or July there is a new med coming out that you can sprinkle in water or juice and it dissolves, and they just drink their meds.. I can't remember the name of it, if I find out i will let you know..  we are going to be trying that..

Thanks and good luck

Sara

I think that there is a liquid methylphenidate...I think I read an ad for it in the ADDitude magazine....

Yep here is some info on it:

chasesmom7939222.7928935185I think the trick to get them to swallow the pill is giving them something they do not have to suck just swallow.  I have not given my son meds but I finnally get him swallowing the omega 3 pill and they are quite large I put it in yougrt and he swallow them with out even feeling it he says.
