working out / exercising + meds question | ADHD Information

I think it depends on your dosage and how your body is responding, your heart should not be beating out of your chest, thats bad . Im on about 15mg adderall (1yr)a day and run a couple miles 2 times a week and lift weights about 3. I immedeatly noticed that I sweat more than I used to because of the stimulants tendency to elevate body temp and increase heart rate. My doc said he would be hesitant to increase the dosage if I decided to say train for a half marathon. Exercise is good for your heart, dont eliminate it, just dont overdo it Id say. like Kid said, after youre body gets used to it youre heart wont be going so haywire.

Yup.  Nothing worse than having a heart attack while your trying to live right, in fact, its totally non-conducive to living period.  Sounds like your really into keeping yourself fit so you probably know what to watch out for.  Don't push yourself.  Treat it just the same as you would if you were starting to exersize after a long illness when your body is not used to being pushed.  I was the same way at first when I started taking Adderall... rapid heartbeat, sweating, but that should taper off within a week or so, if not, get back with your doc.  I get a tremendous amount of physical exersize, but when I feel the ticker straining, I back off.  Use common sense.  (I don't have much, so I borrow it from people who say;  "you ok?  You look like your having a heart attack dude, your face is all red".

is it safe to do cardio exercise while starting / taking stimulants? I usually do 45 minutes of cardio (running, swimming, elliptical, etc.) like 6 days/week and lift weights 2 or 3 days a week as well. I just started taking Ritalin and felt my heart race very uncomfortably, but my doc said it was normal and most people I have heard from here say things like that will wear off in time.

I LOVE working out and don't want to give it up, but I also don't want to mess up my heart or something by making it beat faster than it already does when I'm on Ritalin.
