We gave Ritalin LA 20mg about 8 months. No go! In the last 6 weeks, doc tapered DS from Ritalin and started Eye Q supplements.
I had so much hope that this supplement would work on its own. After 2 phone calls from his teacher and a threat of "we can't teach him", the decision was taken to start DS on Strattera.
I am paying for this out of my pocket each month. I am not quite sure where I will find the money but if it will make DS's life easier, I will beg and borrow.
He took his first Strattera of 10mg at 3.30pm this afternoon. Within the hour he was fast asleep!!!! I couldn't wake him for a while but eventually at 6pm I got him awake. He still had homework to do! He attempted a bit but really wasn't feeling well (very subdued too).
I have decided to keep him out of school tomorrow. To feel side-effects this intensely will not be easy at school.
I am now holding thumbs and toes and everything else that Strattera is going to work for him! He deserves relief!!!
Yes I thought of that after I posted the suggestion...that it may not be available to you in S. Africa...that is too bad, but you should ask the doctor...I think that there may be samples available...since it is not a stimulant..I think I read that somewhere, but it could be different in your country for samples too. Thanks folks, but I do not have this option available to me in South Africa. I have studied their website at length and there are no local contacts. Probably why it is so expensive to begin with as it is imported. Besides, my husband and I own our own business and we are going to have a hard time proving we need assistance - I know that sounds strange but we certainly did not budget for almost 700 (don't know the current exchange rate) extra. Be that as it may, if this drug will work for DS - we will persevere. Despite us not really being able to afford it, we are not on a lower income scale, so it really is a catch-22!
He is on day 2 and so far so good. He is hardly eating and is still tired but isn't feeling poorly or anything. I am glad I kept him out of school. We spent some time working on an oral for next week and he concentrated really well for the most part! I also noticed a good improvement in overall fidgeting and vocal noise (sorry!). I had almost 2 hours where he kept himself quietly entertained. That hasn't happened in quite some time.
I am surprised that his dosage should be reversed, however I really need to place my trust in my doctor at this point as he is the only resource (other than wonderful advice here) that I have.
His dosage is 10mg twice a day for the first 5 days and then 10mg once daily administered in the morning.
I don't have health insurance, but even if I did - ADHD treatment was removed as a chronic illness a couple of years ago and therefore not covered. (The applies for depression - don't understand why steps like this were taken!)
Find the phone number of the company that makes the med and call them. They probably have a patient assistance program. You will have to fill out a form and have income verification, but then you may get the med free or nearly free....it is worth a try, all they can do is say no! And then you are no worse off than now....The dosage of Strattera should be reversed, 10 mg once a day, then 18, then 20, then on up to the target dose.
I agree with calling Eli Lilly and asking for their patient assistance program, or look at their website
www.strattera.com, there is info there I beleive.
