ADHD meds and tummy troubles | ADHD Information

DD, who's 6 1/2, started Metadate two weeks ago. She was also on an antibiotic at the time, and had some problems with diarrhea and tummy pain. We figured it was probably the antibiotic. Earlier this week, she went off the antibiotic, but the tummy pain and soft stools continued. I'd noticed that the potential side effects listed for Metadate included abdominal pain, so I called her ped yesterday, and she told us to switch her to Concerta.

She took her first dose of Concerta this morning, and has been complaining quite a bit more about tummy pain. She has also had a few rounds of diarrhea. It seems that her tummy is worse on the Concerta than it was on the Metadate.

Is this normal when you're first starting ADHD meds? If so, does it go away after a while, or does it mean that you need to switch to a different med? What has been your experience? (I don't want to complain to the doctor if this is to be expected, KWIM?)

it does happne but often goes away with time. Make sure she east ahigh protein/fat breakfast and that will help tremendously.

Well, it definitely seems to be the Concerta. She had the same problem this morning after taking it.

I'll be calling her doctor tomorrow. My guess is that she'll want her to take the Metadate or something else instead. (Her tummy wasn't quite as bad on it.)

This could definately be because of the medication.  This also happened to my son.  It was about a week, and it just went away!!
