We have tried melatonin. It worked great at first but lost it's effective. We have tried melatonin from two different companies and both have been a chewable tablet that was cherry flavored
As for what else have we noticed. It seems we find an ADHD med that works great, but by the time we get to the end of bottle (1 month) the school is calling asking if we have been forgetting to give it to him, and when I get up in the morning I ask dh are you sure that you gave it too him. So it seems to cycle. When the meds are working they work great, but at the end of the month hold on because he gets very aggressive, excessive talking, rage, etc.
In talking to others they just mentioned that the cycling along with sleep distubrances could be bipolar.
I'm not trying to dx, just trying to get as much info as possible.
We had the night from He__ last night. We are all sick in the house. I tested positive for influenza and we are coughing running fevers etc. While ds fell asleep quickly by 9:00 p.m. but by 11:00 p.m. he was up for the night. I tried everything under the moon last night, he finally fell asleep around 5:00 a.m. this morning. Being sick on top of being up with him all night was not a good combination.
I called the psch. this morning. He said there is only one more sleeping pill for children that we haven't tried. My dh is going to pick it up tonight after work and I am crossing my fingers, toes, etc. that it will work tonight as I am physicall exhusted!
aus10.meletonin has worked great for my son. He just started taking it a few weeks ago, and we have very little sleep issue's. He still wakes up early, but falls right asleep and for the most part stays asleep. My son is almost 8 and takes .5mg. I have not seen it in liquid, but I bet you could crush it and put it in applesauce or something like that and give it to him that way if they don't sell liquid form. I break my son's in half to make it .5 mg so crushing it should be fine, I would check with a pharmasist first just to make sure. Another FYI is research is showing the smaller doses of meletonin work best, so you may want to start there. My son is a very tall kid for his age(4ft 7in) and 58 lbs and I give him .5mg.
Good Luck!!
Lauriema25, thanks for the info I am going to try it. I let you'll know how it works. Thanks, I might even try it myselfThe melatonin that I buy at Wal-mart is in tablet form for swallowing. I used to crush it for my son and put it in a bite of ice cream or yogurt. We started with the 1mg form five years ago and now he takes 3mg.As I am sure most of you know by my posts recently. We have been having some severe sleep issues and we are constantly changing meds. My ds sleeps about 4 hours a night total (it is broken up into little segments) we also seem to have the change the dose of his Ritalin every 30 days. It seems like when we are just about to the bottom of the container, the school starts calling and we start noticing changes at home.
Some at church mentioned to me that it seems like this is a cycle that occurs about every 30 days and the lack of sleep could be bioplar with the ADHD.
We are seeing a new pschyaritst on April 12th and I am hoping he will be able to help us figure all of this out. But I thought if I could find out a little more about bipolar before the appointment that might be helpful.
I have been having a similar situation with my son lately. he is on daytrana 15 mg and is up until 11;30 complaining that he can't sleep. His dad is bipolar, who i am divorced from. He decided that meds were not for him so I couldn't take it anymore. I did ask the doc in the very beginning of find out that my son was adhd if they were related, he said it is possible but he thought that my son was not. I take my son off the meds on the weekends because he is very thin, and I have been noticing an extreme mood change. Your questioning this is making me think that maybe this is turning into something more. I think they do have a direct corrilation. So defineatly have the doctor check this.sorry son in room Ill write laterWhen my son takes Daytrana, he is a peaceful child. Some times a little weepy but for the most part it is very effective. Its just the sleep issue and when I take him off it on the weekends, believe me it is Sunday and Monday can't some soon enough. I am curious to see how the appointment goes on Tuesday. and what they will give him because like your son my son cannot take a pill, so basically all I know is Daytrana which is 128 a month because my insurance only covers part of it. If you find the answer to the pill thing, that is less expensive let me know. good luck
I can really relate to this discussion because my son, who is 9 1/2, was dx w/ ADHD and we started him on Daytrana (because he didn't want to swallow a pill), and he did not get better on it even after increasing it from 10 to 15 then to 20. It benefited him very little and he was up until 11:30 every night while taking the daytrana complaining he couldn't sleep. He also became even more irritable than he usually is, which is quite irritable and moody. My husband is on medication for bipolar, although he is not classic bipolar, but I have begun to wonder if my son may have a mood cycling disorder. We are going to a new psychiatrist on Tuesday to help us determine whether to try a different ADHD med (we stopped the daytrana a few weeks ago after his third major meltdown while on that drug...) or try and treat him for his moods first. I hate the thought of bipolar, but in addition to all the ADHD symptomes he has, he can also be very moody, negative, irritable, etc. So needless to say, with the family history and the fact that he didn't respond well to the daytrana, we may end up going that route, but we'll see. There is a book called "The Bipolar Child" which should be helpful in understanding that illness better.Have you used Melatonin to help with sleep? It is an over the counter and can be purchased at wal-mart. We used this for awhile for my son and is suppose to be really safe. It can be found in the vitamen section of any major store or pharmacy. This typically takes 30 min to 60 min to kick in. I use three mg with my 60 pound child! Are there any other signs besides sleeping issues that are signals or red flags for bipolarness? My ex has the sleeping issues and has bipolar and ad/hd. My son doesn't have the sleeping issues but does have ad/hd. I am curious as to what I might need to be on the look out for.I keep seeing melatonin on this website and never heard about it before. Is is in pill form or liquid. because my son 10years cant do pills. It sounds great and I would love to try it. I guess I should go to a health food store for this? Thanks for the info
