what are they looking into? | ADHD Information

thank you vickie for the links!..

Yesterday I read an article about some researchers who actually measured dopamine and norepinephrine levels in ADHD vs. non-ADHD people's brains. They found that the levels in the prefrontal cortex were lower in the ADHD subjects. The big thing with this is that now they know what they are aiming for when designing new meds, rather than just hypothesizing. The only thing I didn't understand was why would antidepressants that affect these neurotransmitters not work as well as stims for ADD, if they are working on the same neurotransmitters?

Just thought I'd share that info since when I read it, it gave me some hope. Sorry, I don't have the link, I found it by accident in a google search. soberxinsanity39158.5937152778can anyone who has any info about what the FDA or researchers are looking to do in the near and/or far future to treat ADHD? new types of meds, refining the current meds, etc. I can't think of anything right now, but I too will add anything I find out along the way. Thanks everyone in advance!

Interesting...

If you hop over to the alternatives board there is a thread on research into the potential of alt treatment. There are some good links there as well.

The FDA does not do primary research, but implements regulations to maintain safety of drugs, devices, cosmetics and food. If you want to know about recalls or drug approvals go to www.FDA.gov and follow the links under the current press releases for recalls or approvals.

To check for current clinical trials on potential treatment options go to www.clinicaltrials.gov and type in ADHD as the key word. You will see drug trials by pharm companies on new meds, by places like the NIH on combo treatments and aternative treatments. Then if you make note of the sponsor (NIH, Pharm company, etc) you can try thier web site to see all of the things they are working on that might be of interest to you.
