No, most of the meds used for Bi polar are not used for ADHD, and if he is bi polar then that needs to be stabilized before using meds for ADHD.
bpkids.org has lots of info!
edbson39160.4530555556Ok guys!
Thank you so much for your responses to my postings!
You guys have mentioned that I need to get Kenny re-evaluated, (diagnosed). These last 2 appointments have been with a new child psychiatrist. My son and I have both really clicked with her. We will go this Friday again.
She talked about bi-polar and I really worry, freak out when I hear that word. She said that there was different degrees of bi-polar and explained some things to me about it.
She said that she would like to treat him with medication that they use for bi-polar.
I know that when my son says bi-polar, it's like he thinks that that person is totally crazy. I have heard him and his friends talking and use bi-polar to describe other kids and I have gotten on him like stink on poop! But I think in their mind, they think bi-polar, they think crazy.
And no, I haven't ever said that to Kenny, I have told him that bi-polar is just a mood disorder and you have to have medication to control it.
It does really scare me though. I have suffered from depression and I am sure that being bi-polar and not getting treated for it, is much harder on a person emotionally. (not that one is better than the other!)
Don't they use a lot of the same medications for add/adhd and bi-polar disorders?
And my son has such horrible impulsivity control, do you have that with bi-polar disorder? I have no idea!
I think I will go to the bookstore, could anybody recommend a good book on bi-polar disorder. A simple one!
I really appreciate your support!!!
Thanks,
Kendra
