Well, I just got off the phone after a very heated conversation with the receptionist at my drs office - the dr left for the day, but the note in my son's chart says she wants to give him Metadate??
This is not a med that I have really heard of, and I am very nervous about giving it to my son without having even spoken with the dr. The next available appointment that they can give me with her is April 4th, although they will put me on an "emergency list".
They will give the dr. my messages, but say that they cannot guarantee that she will "have time" to call me back tomorrow.
I don't know what to do.
Well, there is Metadate, and Medate CD. They are both methylphenidate( Ritalin), but the CD is extended release.
Some kids seem to tolerate Metadate alot better then other meds.
What kind of Dr. is it? and why are they chagning meds?
edbson39161.7149421296Medidate is ritlan. My son is on medidate cd it and it lasts through school for him. Aaron'smom39161.7154976852My son was on Focalin...ramped up to 15 mg where he did good for about a month, then it stopped working for him. Upped it to 20 mg, and he became like a zombie - couldn't smile if his life depended on it.
Tried 36 mg of Concerta, but it left him very impulsive - couldn't sit at circle time, can't stand in line, troubles on the bus again. So, upped it to 54 mg, but he became very angry and aggressive.
So...trying to find something that will work for him.
Dr. is a pediatric psychiatrist. I just hadn't heard much about Metadate, and it scared me to just give him something that I don't regularly hear about.
dmid39161.7187268519The focalin is alot stronger med than either metadate or Concerta. Metadate CD lasts 8 hours, so good for kids with sleep issues. My son is almost 6 yrs old. He takes Metadate CD 10 mg in the morning before school and again at 1:00 pm for the last 6 months. He has ADHD w/ impulsivity and ODD. Metadate has worked well for him but the last few weeks it has become apparent that the drug is not lasting as long as it used to. The teacher has found that he starts acting up at around 10:30-11:00 nearly every morning. When I say acting up, I mean he starts running around the room and screaming until its time for lunch. Then after lunch he gets his next dose and all is fine with the world until he gets home.
Friday the doctor put him on the Daytrana patch. I can only hope that it works as well as Metadate used to.
my son's nero doctor wants to start my son on metadate later as his first med. he was on adderall xr which gave him side effects and just wasnt for him. i looked up medadate on the internet and its like ritalin somewhat and seems to be for impulsiveness. i wish you luck on this new med and let me know how your child does on it for i think my son will be on it by augustMy son is 8 and he takes Metadate CD 10mg in the morning. It seems to last till about 4 pm. So far, he is behaving at school but his grades have not improved alot. We're still working on that. Metadate CD comes in 10, 20 and 30mg capsules, they can be opened to sprinkle on food if needed. We tried Adderall XR a few months ago, it didn't work at all for us. Hope this helps.
My DD is 11 and started on Metadate CD in late Oct. She takes 40 mg in the AM. Unfortunately for her, it only lasts about 5 1/2 hrs., but she says it really helps her focus while in her system. Just wish it lasted a little longer.
Before Metadate CD, she tried a short trial of Concerta, but it had no effect whatsoever on her.
Good luck!
I read here that someone had an EKG done on their child before trying Metadate. Do most people do that first before these drugs. My son is adopted and we have no biological parent medical history as we adopted him from a foreing country. My doctor said usually they check a patients family history of heart disease before prescribing these meds. Now I'm worried perhaps we should have had an EKG done first. My 5 1/2 year old daughter was recently started on Metadate CD 10mg. Mainly because the Dr wanted a lower dosage for a long acting Ritalin. Concerta starts at 18mgs. However, she was having severe heart palpitations, stomach pains and headaches after the 4th dose (palpitations after the 2nd dose that she told me about anyway). I told the Dr about this and she told me to stop giving that to her. I suggested trying 5mgs of Short acting Ritalin and see how she does.. we go back tomorrow for her to check her blood pressure and heart rate before starting anything else. (The EKG that we did before starting Metadate CD came back normal). She's talking about only doing 1 dose of 5mgs just to start and see how she reacts to that, then she'll up it to twice a day and given at school.
