Insurance won’t cover testing | ADHD Information

Go ahead, pay for it, then submit it to insurance. They will deny it, then you can resubmit and complain. It's a PITA, but it just may work. Most insurance companies won't pay for testing (IQ, academic achievement, LDs, etc) but they will pay for a child psychiatrist to evaluate and use the DSM criteria to diagnose. I paid out of pocket.

Thanks so much for your ideas - I really appreciate it. I was also wondering about 504 and IEP. I am trying to avoid bring any of his problems to the attention of his school - since his Kindergarten teacher thinks he's fine and we live in a VERY small town - but ,of course, I will if I have to. But what I'm wondering - and haven't found the answer I'm looking for - is what qualifies for those services? Academically he is in the top of his class - which I know he can fall behind and I'm trying to prevent that - so for him it's mostly social. He does have a hard time focussing if there is too much going on around him but , as of now, he really enjoys school work. We have to buy him workbooks from Target because he loves them - and they actually keep him busy for more than 5 minutes! If any one can answer my questions I would be very greatful!

And, PLEASE, wish me luck for tomorrow. It's his appointment - not testing - but I'm not even sure what they will do. I'll keep you updated.

My only suggestion would be to try the health dept.  They may offer the same testing through thier mental health dept but at the cheaper rate based on income. If they can't help they can probably point you to a place that can.

I'm wondering if anyone can help me or has any advise. We have been waiting 2 long months for my sons ADHD testing -which was supposed to be this Thusrday - and we got a call yesterday - on the machine, of course - that his appointment has been cancelled because our insurance won't pay for the test, but we can still go for counseling. We were referred there by our ped. so we called him to help, but of course he was out of the office today. The nurse did honestly seemed concerned and confused as to why they won't cover it. We also called the insuance company and got no where with them - "we don't deem it medically neccessary". Of course I called the mental health place where he was to get tested and told them I was very upset that they waited this long to tell me - but, of course, it wasn't their fault. So, I kept his appointment for Thusrday just because it took me so long to get it - I don't know what they will do, but I think it's better than nothing until we figure out what to do. Should I have his ped. refer us somewhere else? Or won't that matter and this is all up to the insurance company? What do I do? He needs to be officially tested and officially diagnosed so we can move on and help him. He's almost 6, the end of the school year is almost here, I want something done! I NEED something done! Can anyone help?
