was anyone scared to talk to their doc? | ADHD Information
I'm 24 years old, dealing with anxiety, and after having done a lot of research, I want to talk to my doctor and see if she will evaluate me with respect to adult ADD. The more I see about it, the better I feel because it seems like it's ME to a T! I have been tracking my anxiety attacks for the past year, and the one pattern with all attacks is that they have arisen seemingly out of frustration having to do with inability to focus on my work or homework, as well as on random things around the house (and freaking out because i am seriously un-able to organize anything!).
Anyway, I'm scared to ask my doctor about it because although my mind has been bouncing in and out of everything since I can remember, I always managed to get good grades etc., and I'm worried she'll dismiss the thought immediately and then I'll be stuck.
Does anyone have any advice? Or any advice on how to bring it up? Thanks so much, in advance.
If she dismisses the thought then dismiss her-plain and simple.
You don't need a doc that's insensitive to your thoughts,do you ? If she's good she'll know how psyche and body are linked.
Even if you don't have it she should take your concerns seriously and have everything tested not just filling out a questionaire neither. My tests were an all-day ordeal, literally.
She is paid well,I assume ?
thank you both so much for your input. My doctor does have 27 years of experience and she has always been a good listener w/respect to my anxiety issues so I guess I should have no reason to doubt her now. Hopefully she will help me look into this. thanks again.
I had anxiety too before I went to see my doc. I did my homework and researched. I even brought a book on ADHD written by Daniel Amen M.D. with me. I thought I would have to be defensive about ADHD to my medical doctor.
He listened to all I said. He asked me about my struggles. And told me that he actually has many patients with ADHD, including adults. I was surprised how knowlegable he was with the meds being prescribed for ADHD and he went through different ones explaining to me why he selected the one for me. He wanted me to report to him with side effects and progress. I wish I had gone to him sooner.
I didn't think I needed help at first but now I am glad I am getting support from this board, the EAP counselor at work and my doctor. If your doctor is not receptive to you, then you should find a doctor you trust and can have a long, good relationship with. Good luck.
