adderall xr wearing off & other concerns | ADHD Information

I have been on the Adderall xr for 7 months now at 20 mg in morning, 10 mg noon, and 10 mg at 5 pm. Used to work wonders, I was in great mood, had energy, appetitie was curbed. Now all of a sudden, it seems to not even work. I take it, it seems like I haven't even taken it,, I have no energy, hungry all the time, very moody/depressed. What is going on with it? A friend suggested to take xr in morning then see about taking regular adderall as a booster in the afternoon times. That is fine but why all the sudden is it doing this. I would love and appreciate any suggestions.

Sounds like you may be bumming out because the side effects have tapered off.  I kept on getting the same thing about the same time.  In 5 years I've been increased from 20 mg AdderallXR to 90mg " " and it was always around 6 months.  I was assuming that because I wasn't getting the energy and great mood enhancing qualities I must be developeing a tollerance to it.  By three years I was at 90mg and the doc said no higher.  It was then he explained the fact that if I was taking it for those reasons that yes, eventually they stop working, but if its for the ADHD symptoms, they should remain effective.

I thought long and hard about it, trying to be as objective about it as I could, and I realized that because I wasn't getting the swell side effects any longer I was getting depressed and moody as well, and why wouldn't I?  After all, my mind was working great, so much so that I noticed the side effects not being there and focused on that.  I have found that once I got that fact in my head and looked for alternative methods to aid my energy my eating habbits improved, sleep improved and my whole being improved including my mood.  I don't take mine 3 times a day, thats too much of a spread.  I would ask about taking it 20mg am and 20mg pm... around 2.  Thats how I take mine.  It overlaps the morning dose by a few hours and keeps me running at optimum levels.  Good luck renee

Ugghh, Vexie, you need to stop judging everyone with ADHD because of ONE person you know is abusing the meds. She must've had a very bad Psych because those that have true ADHD don't abuse the meds that help them.

I also love how you are generalizing every one of us with ADHD by saying 'you people'. and insinuating that we're all a bunch of druggies. I suggest you see a therapist (of course a Psychologist that doesn't prescribe meds) for your own issues.

FYI... I also see a Psychologist to help me with skill building and behavior modification so it's not just drugs... not to mention I'm NOT on a Stimulant med.. I'm on Strattera which is NOT HABIT FORMING. So there blows your whole generalization theory.

By law schools are not allowed to pressure anyone about putting children on meds. They can tell you what they notice when around the child but they could be sued if they actually say you need to medicate your child! (At least here in Virginia it's that way, it's what my daughter's teacher told me).

I'm sorry.. I could not keep my mouth shut. It's un-educated people that irk the heck out of me!

Wow Vexie, that is a pretty judgmental thing to say.

I actually think that both of the original posts were pretty good examples of responsible adults with ADHD.  Guest was not educated.  As soon as he/she figured out what was going on he adjusted his regimen.  Reneadd was needing the same answers.  I am on ADHD meds and actually decrease my dose as much as possible.  I am a grown man and only take a dose that is usually given to teenagers.

I wish I was treated as a child.  My life in school would have been alot easier than what I endured. don't punish your step son because his mom is abusing her meds.

Places like this forum help us understand the things that our docs do not always tell us, or we do not here in the information flood at the doc's office. It is very responsible to compare notes with others if you are having issues; you can then be better prepared to discuss things with the doc and be a better partner in your treatment.

It is sad when someone becomes addicted to any substance. It is hard to do this legally, with the control these substances are under.

According to recent studies, finding effective treatment actually reduces the chances of a child abusing their meds or other substances (a form of self medicating). It also reduces the chances of accidents, early pregnancy, school failure, relationship failure and brushes with the law. The question then is: is he receiving appropriate treatment or are you shoving pills down his throat without regard to the other aspects of a successful treatment plan? Sorry if this seems harsh.
