um ph phphpph hhphh pphph  is this on  can you hear ME!

Lot and lots of meds , where is the discussion about the tendencies of children on meds to start using drugs  to the point of abuse.

I see alot of people  walking around this issue but im not seeing safety net o f what happens to teens that trade theirs meds for otheer drugs .

you know what im talking about!  what is the medical communities obligation to help these kids  when they are tempted to self medicate .

Oh please god no silent crickets this time !

How do doctors to help counsel the kids on thier dangers of addiction tendencies later in life . ADHD is life long isnt it? How would doctors recommend very young adults deal with living without meds without insurance without parents without  doctors ?

p.s. silent crickets are the crickets you hear at comedy clubs when a perfomer cant get the crowd to react.

im also asking if there should be a formal consultation between doctor only and child .

i think at once every three years should be a minimum .20, 17, 14,11,8 like prepaid from prescriptions cost  1cent per pill to direct counseling . Visits for counseling on why ADHD people should not self med.

though the parents understand the difference i believe medicated kids need even more drug abuse understanding from people other than teachers and parents .  its hard to ignore cancelled insurance NEEDS for young people whom have left home suddenly on thier own . THEY know they need something  but there is no one to help. except the guy on the corner who never closes .

i understand statics but it seems erred in some way.  a real total in human terms

even under a doctors direction 10,000 ADHD kids turn to illegal drugs every year. i made that up , but would like to know where the public can see the real statistics that the doctors offer when they say  " consensus of doctors"

What are silent crickets?

I consider nicotine to be a drug. My ds who is almost 12 was offered a cigarrette about 2 years ago. It was summer so he was not on meds. He said no. I was so proud when he told me!

Hi,

Our ped...(wonderful man) My husband and I trust him...He is the chief of Pediatrics at a very large and important hospital. Anyway, this is what he said about that subject...Alot of ADHD kids that are not medicated are very unsuccessful in school and therefore as the years roll on and their self esteem plummets...they end up quiting school and hanging out with the wrong crowd, and do become involved in drugs...also they who are not medicated tend to self medicate. ie...use illegal drugs. We just need to talk to our children and always know who their friends are and what they are doing...Also our children need to know that because of the impulsive tendencies that they have they may be more willing to try drugs when offered.

Hope this helps...it is scary! I will tell you the people in my family with add (none were medicated) do have substance abuse problems. I believe it is because of the self medicating factor, and they were unsuccessful in school.

Also - pray and know all we can do is what we feel is best!Smile

My sons Doc said the studies she has read indicate untreated ADHD kids are 40% likely to use drugs while kids medicated are 20% likely. I have a copy of them but not on hand right now, while try to post website later.

I think the best place to start looking for specific statistics and studies would be a doctor's office or JAMA. I've found that these studies and their findings are so often written in language that is so profession-specific ("shrink-speak" or "pharm-ese") that the average person gets lost in them. Good luck!
