Does anyone have a child with more of the hyperactive ADD but not as much of the inattentive traits? I am wondering what the child is like as they get older.
My 9 year old dd is ADHD. SHe tested combined type but has so much more trouble with the hyperactivity. SHe has never had problems focusing and has always made good grades, of course she's been on medication since Kindergarten. WHen not on meds she might miss what is going on becuase she is fidgety or MOVING! Her dr. keeps saying she won't be hyper forever but aren't some add adults restless and sort of hyper?

I think that what happens to hyperactive type adults is that they (if they are successful) find a job that plays to their strengths, and find a job where they can keep moving as opposed to a desk job. Also, they tend to learn to adapt more to social norms and how much movement is acceptable in public settings....so it is not as noticeable once the child grows to adulthood.
But this is all theory on my part....I have observed my hubby, who was not dx till adulthood, and is combined....he runs a wrecker service where he is outside, towing cars and semis out of ditches, fields, and other predicaments. Each instance requires a unique approach and really holds his attention, then he gets to scurry all over the scene to hook and move the vehicle in the way he needs to to clear the road.
chasesmom7939170.3653703704Hyperactivity tends to internalize as a person ages, so it looks like they are no longer hyper any more and "grew out of" ADHD. This internal hyper can be in a busy mind and may even be a strength in some fields. I was hyper as a kid and have settled down physically, but there is a place in my head where I am either planning a project or playing music while I work. I also have the opportunity to get up every half hour or so, so no-one notices that I have residual hyperactivity. When working on a project, I can force all of that energy into it and really accomplish a ton of things in record time; but I have problems with the final touches unless I have a deadline.
