Our meeting with the school | ADHD Information

Share
It sounds like the right path to take.  It does seem scary, but often the results and assistance that can come from it in the end makes it well worth it.

Well, some of you know that my son and I had a meeting yesterday with his teacher and the principal, to discuss his behaviour at school and also ways to further help his learning.  He has not been diagnosed with ADHD, but both his teacher and I have suspected it for awhile.  He has been receiving extra support etc in school since the beginning of the year, to see if it would help.  The teacher basically said yesterday, however, that there has not really been any change in his behaviour or learning despite her many efforts to help him, and the principal also has noticed, while visiting the classroom, that my son would be not paying attention, slouching in his chair, wiggling around, rolling on the floor, and other such behaviour.  He struggles A LOT in school, focussing and processing the information, staying on task, etc, and this is concerning all of us.  They have suggested that he be presented to a school panel of experts, consisting of psychologists, slp's, social workers, etc, and see what steps to take next.. and then if they feel he should be evaluated, they will get my permission and we'll take it from there.   I don't know if this is standard procedure.. this is all so very new to me.  It scares me - it's like he's going to be put under a microscope and be seen by so many different people.. I worry how that will affect him.  But of course I want to do whatever I can to help him.  I think the next few months are going to be pretty stressful .

This would be the steps to begin the process of an IEP.  It would be a good move for your son's educational sake.  They will determine if he has any weaknesses, LD's, what academic level he is currently at so that progress can be closely monitored in the future.  The may also come up with a Behavior Plan, which would also help him.  They can do & have you do a Connor's Assesment which would be a first step you could take to a physician if you wanted to find out about ADHD..........  It is probably in your son's best interest to allow them to proceed with this.

Good Luck!

It is kind of scary, but it sounds like the school and teacher do have your son's best interests at heart.  That is always comforting, and once the process is started it is nice to feel like you are taking positive steps for your childs future.
