Dealing with ADHD is like putting togather a life long puzzle....What works for some , may or may not work for others...and yet it all seems to come from the same source. One of the most helpful sources i have ever come across is the internet.
Knowledge is power....Learn everything you can about ADHD.
You are the FIRST Advocate for your child, noone will ever love and care for your child more than you.
I was once told that ADHD is not a diagnoses...that it was the result of an underlying cause.....extremly skeptical...I began searching.
The first thing you do.... before you commit to a new Drs appt is ask..Questions...Do you treat ADHD...?
You will find surprising answers...Remember that Drs are people too...and remember it is a business.
The first thing I did....was get an allergist.....to rule out any allergies...the second thing I did was get a neurologist...Ritilan,Paxil, Welebutrin, prozac, zoloft and effexor..didn't work. What is working for my daughter..after many years and Drs later is Adderall 5mg and xanax....<she is 19 now> she was diagnosed at 5 with a severe case of ADHD.
her allergies are milk, eggs, wheat, corn. While she can tollerate small amounts she cannot..tollerate large amounts without some sort of reaction.
we recently took her off of pastas, breads, cereals, gravys, cakes..better yet any thing made with wheat glutens, and we took her off of any whole corn products. grits, cornbread..etc...her outlook on life has improved...and she dosent seem as depressed as she always seemed to be...it seems her thrive is coming into place....the Adderall..helps her maintain focus...and clear thoughts....the Xanax has seemed to help curb any anxities.....and the rest...talking and a way to vent her frustrations...has helped her so much...I went to counseling to help me help her....and now she is old enough to describe her experiences ..and the things she endured.....I tell her..this is the way it is supposed to feel, this is the way is is supposed to be done, this is the way someone typically reacts.....I know this all seems to be sketchie as you read this...but it comes from many years of researching, many arguements, many trials and errors. many tears of hurt and pain, and yet many tears of joy and laughter...Remove the Dis from abilities and focus on the abilities...because so is your child as he believes.
To all the wonderful parents....May you all find strength..and be encouraged.

Jaydub,
A psychiatrist should not be doing surgery?
I would recommend seeing one soon.
My daughter was on Wellbutrin and was having some side effects like agitation and irritabilty. It was so bad that the teacher notified me that she was yelling at kids in the middle of class. When she got home she would be so emotional that she would just sob and tell me that everyone hates her because she is so mean. Anyway, I called the doc to tell her that I would like to take her off. No call back. So I decided to take her off on my own not knowing that there could be some side effects if you go cold turkey - which she had that night. Very upset, screaming, saying she can't sleep alone because of monsters - she's eight. Anyway, called the doc again - no call back. I finally called the owner of the agency two days later who told me that the doc was out for surgery. I said then somebody should have called me back! She hung up on me and the doc finally did call me back and had the nerve to say that she did leave me a message! It may not sound so bad to some people - but I am just livid. It's bad enough that I have to deal with this child who is adhd and having side effects and withdrawals. Somebody should have told me about possible withdrawals and somebody should have called me back! I think they are unethical, not to mention unprofessional. Thanks for letting me vent
I think you would file it with the licensing board. Can I be nosy and ask what happened?I would be furious! I thought doctors typical had some one else cover for them if they had to be out for things like that. And there really was no reason for someone in the office not to let you know that the docotr was out of the office for a few days.
I'm sorry your daughter had such a rough time.
Does anyone know where to file a complaint against a doctor besides your insurance co? Is there like a better business bureau for physicians??
