Cause bloody noses?
Yes, it can. It is a common side effect of the stim medications. My 13 yr old gets at least one a month. however we have taught him how to deal with the nose bleeds. They are more of a nusance than anything else. It is not enough to cause us to change him from a medication that works. He takes concerta and focalin.
Methylphenidate (the med in ritalin) can cause nose bleeds. The incidence is less than 2%. If these nose bleed happen more than once, report it to the doc. The doc will need to sort out whether it is due to dehydration of the mucous membranes in the nose or due to thrombocytopenia (low platelets). Is there easier than usual bruising? Either way, call the doc to sort it out.WHAT KIND OF SEISURES DOES YOUR SON HAVE. WE HAVE OUR SON ON DEPAKOTE 125MG 3X A DAY AND 250MG AT BEDTIME. HE IS SEEING A NEUROLOGIST IN MAY TO BE CHECKED FOR THEM. IF THE DOC CUTS THE DEPAKOTE BACK HE AT TIMES WILL SHAKE SOME AND STARE UP AT SPACE AND THEN GOES BACK TO SLEEP OR WE WILL WAKE HIM UP.
