Sammo39179.5486111111I was talking to my good friend who has an ADHD 5th grader (A/B student in the GT program) and she was telling me he has a problem spelling words the same way consistently. His teacher has flagged this as a problem area to work on and has been very helpful in digging up resources for him on her own time, as he won't qualify for services in school.
And so, what we were wondering as we talked was- how typical is this for an ADHD student? Or could he possibly have an as yet unidentified LD? He is medicated and he works hard for those grades he gets, but he will spell the same word 3 or 4 different ways on the same page and when he was writing a book report last weekend he switched several of the characters names midway though (to names that were not even in the book) in addition to spelling several words in several different ways.
Any insights?
Well, I think that spelling mistakes are pretty common (re: this board!!!), but especially in grade school as a whole. I was recently at my son's school and stopped to read some posters that the fifth grade class had made and was surprised to see so many dropped silent e's and incorrectly spelled diphthongs (sp?! ). Spelling is a lost art, IMHO. It's so easy to spellcheck now, and kids tend to type in a shorthand kind of way to each other. It may be that he's writing so quickly that he just gets it out and doesn't focus on the spelling. Is his teacher concerned about the spelling changes, other than just catching the mis-spellings? ? I have a nephew with a processing disorder who does the same thing. Words like "forever" can be spelled three different ways in one paper. Perhaps the speech and language therapist at the school might have some ideas about this, although in my experience you could be inviting a whole passle of testing if you ask an s & l therapist.
Spelling and writing for my son has always been a challenge! I think some of it is his rush to complete his work because he doesn't want to have to spend anymore time on school work than he has to. He will even misspell words that are written in the question for him! In my experience with the students in my class, it is a typical struggle for kids with ADHD (and more and more with kids in general.)My daughter (5th grade) can get As on tests (now that she is on meds) but then spells words all kinds of ways in writing. It seems to be that in spelling, that is all she needs to keep in her head. In writing her work, she needs to spell, write sentances, punctuation and not lose her thought.
Writing is similar. Writing for the sake of making pretty letters (as an art form) was something she can do easily, but when you ad spelling, sentances, punctuation and the information she is trying to write down, writing is painful and sloppy. On meds, she re-learned printing and is now re-learning cursive in the context of writing.
