Hi...my 11 yr. old son was recently put on Concerta 54mg (has been on this for years), Paxil CR-25mg (had been on Celexa) and Tenex 1mg. I am noticing that he has what I think are ticks...he makes this sound..."whoop"...and doesn't know he is doing it. He is also moving his hands around alot....and talking alot.
Now..he has been on Concerta for years...so I can't believe it's that. I am wondering if the combo of the Paxil, tenex and concerta are doing it. Has anyone had the experience of ticks from these meds? He also takes Clonidine at night for sleep..but again, that's been for years . The new factors are Paxil and Tenex. I think they are helping...I am just concerned about the Ticks. I spoke to the psychiatrist and he agrees it's the meds...he wants to see him Sat without any of his meds....
Just wondering if anyone has insights...
Thanks!
Tenex is prescribed to help with tics, right?....maybe it is the paxil....hmmm let us know the outcome...Clonodine and Tenex are both first choice med's to try with Tourette's because they are the mildest. They are both used to control tics. They are also very similar med's, so it's surprising to hear your son is on BOTH of them.
I know nothing about Paxil. I would think it would be that (Paxil) or the Concerta though, not Tenex or Clonodine.
Hi.... my son is on a Concert/Zoloft/Tenex combo.
Yes....... sometimes tics just "crop up" when new meds are added, or even old meds are adjusted upward. Did the Concerta recently get adjusted up?
My son has gone through a few motor/vocal tics like you describe....... and i was told to take a wait and see attitude. Sure enough...they cleared up on their own. It may take a couple of weeks or more.
If the tic is causing huge problems with embarassment at school, teasing, etc... you may not want to wait it out. If it is mainly a "at home" thing and he seems to be able to control it at school..... I'd wait it out. Anxiety and stress are also huge triggers that add to the tic problem. I'd discuss this with the doctor.
Okiemom
Tenex can help with tics, so I think the paxil could be suspect. Tics can ease once the body adjusts to the meds. Also, stress can bring out tics and tics can come and go during brain maturation spurts...I am sure you will be able to work it out with the doc's help.
