I've had amazing success with Adderall XR. However Adderall isn't a med that will help with mood swings especially if you have the before starting the drug. Stimulents in general won't help mood swings you would need a med that works like an Anti-depressant such as Straterra. You might do better on a combination of the too.
As for the Adderall XR it is great for treating focus and hyperactivity. Most people do experience side effects for about the first 2 weeks when starting Adderall so be aware of that. Stomach problems are the most common complaint. I was sick for 2 weeks but after that period the symptoms vanished and the medication has been a life savor. I've been on it for 4 years and finally able to function.
Oh and just another bit of info to prepare you Adderall XR doesn't last all day like straterra does. Usually by the time the kids get home from school it is out of their system and parents either give an additional regular adderall at that time or deal with a unmedicated child.

Hopefully you find what works best!My 9-yr-old son is also taking a Straterra/Adderall XR combination with moderate success. Have you read Dr. Amen's book, something like "Six Types of ADD"? One thing he points out is that different types of ADD & AD/HD call for different types of medicines. The strong reactions (worse than before, or even new negative behaviors) mentioned in other replies may be explained by that.
Also, its my understanding that Strattera only addresses the inattention element of attention deficit, and that Adderall addresses impulsivity. Does anyone have more information about that?
My doctor just switched my son from 40 Miligrams of Straterra a day to Adderall XR. Has anyone seen success with this. The straterra really helped with his mood swings at the lower dose of 25, but not focus, attention, etc. He stopped the strattera all together and i'm wondering if the Adderral will also help with mood swings/aggression etc. as from what I read it can increase that. Tomorrow will be our first day on adderral.

My son was on the adderall. He was able to focus but was an emotional wreck. I hope you have better luck.
My son tried Adderall XR and it was horrible! I stopped it after 2 days. He became very aggressive. Angry and violent. Not like my child at all.(And that was only a 5mg pill). We have seen the most success so far with Concerta.My son is taking both the Adderall XR and Strattera. This combination is working well for him. -Gettingagrip-
