the only thing i have to add about food is ..

get kids involved in choosing the foods

i know the trip to grocery store can be miserable too  but it helps when the food they pick at the store is appealing and we know when thier being silly its ok  just them to get some more of what thaey would really like.

my dd would run all over til one day my unmed add-L had thought   . i would run around being disobiedient  she calls me dear     when im the child    dear stop running while shes pushing the cart and shaking her finger at me  limiting to one toy.

well any way   she picks out some food for me and some food for her self

we ask her to help prepare it    with adult suprv    help take it to the table

and we only give a small portion to start so shes not overwhelmed by the big plate

kind of like me with books   hint hint

i have to read chapters   trying to read a whole book is imtimidating     so i just re edit the bboks i read as chapters

so what im saying is food sometimes needs to severed in smaller portions

when we to the buffet , i usally get her worst behavior so dont go peak hours

but she has to go help pick it out so i dont get the wrong thing  reverse psy,

but she has to at least pick three i use the smaller ice cream bowls  and putthe food in them individually cause nothings supposed to touch. she usually throws a fit cause she wants candy so i go by that first so i dont have a bunch of food getting dropped while sometimes drops to the floor  ,   i get down on her level and calmly say ok you can some candy     tears part the sea        then i explain she can have one piece  which one will it be and she can more after finishing one of the other choices. my hates this approach      she just give unt uhh  gestures and that works for her     oh goddie    but with me and my dw  its a differnet control battle all together.

thats just about when shes getting squirly  after eating and wanting ice cream

and grandpa winds her up too

its annoying to the other patrons o try to redirect her and grampa to go play outside but sometimes due to nature   we sitting there with an ice cram face child ready to take on the world    that when i get the looks i ignore them once while trying get her to at get quieter     .

if some old fart give me the look   you know the look   i  ignore it agian  but thier finger gets out and points at her   iloose my smile  i stare at them and slowly raise my finger at them while everyboby at my table give the old farts the treatment.

everone stare at the old fart for 60 seconds no stop muttering 1-60

it rude of us   and we apologize  and leave a tip big enough  to cover thier tip

by then its time to leave  go home with little miss fit.

watcha gonna do    cant be unsociable , gonna happen  might as talk about the feelings before we get up there to buffet    sometimes there no fit at all   but she still gets looks from the old farts cause shes so bubbly and alive.

---------

i found with my dad when his final stage of glioblastoma was interferring with his attitudes about food  --- if i left cookies beside his bed  --  by morning they would be gone so i would put other things there too cheese crackers lunchables and stuff including mints      shwewww         ;           ;           ;   --sigh---

Have you ever noticed the subject lines in this forum:

"Frustrated" "Upset" "Lost it again" "Cried myself to sleep"

I don't think that parents of "regular" kids have ANY concept of what our daily lives are like. They make reality shows about tattoo artists, little people, etc. - why not a glimpse into our day-to-day struggles with ADD/ADHD?

One little girl said about my boy: "I don't know how you deal with him." Are those the words of a 10-year-old or maybe her mother said something at home? Do any of these "regular" parents have any idea what it's like to be called into the school office AGAIN for ANOTHER meeting? Do they know what it's like to have an emergency call from the principal telling you to come get your son?

Amen to that!

My favourite is when you KNOW they're thinking there's no such thing as ADD/ADHD and that your child's behaviour is simply a result of bad parenting.

AAAAAAAAAARRRGGHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!

OH THEY KNOW

AND THEY ARE GLAD ITS NOT THEM

chases mom, thanks i sent you a message on another post earlier, you are strong and smart. thanks for your knowledge and positive outlook, you are awesome.  I am happy Chase is doing so well, MY 10 year old 60lbs is doing well too with Daytrana.  Some late nights, but getting better,  I get on here when I can but like the meds. I am once again being treated like I'm an idiot.  Cant wait for the day when all my effort in trying to make everyone happy is appreciated, I think it won't be for a while!  Oh well, I can't wait, I love my kids, they are beautiful angels and wouldn't trade one moment with them for the world.  Thanks for your positive response, I feel we all can count on you!
It doesn't help that ADD has been in the news as over diagnosed nor does it help that only the bad outcomes of medication are publicized.

My husband and I were in denial for a while because were victims of the bad press.

I second that!

The media is horrible about the disorder from beginning to end!

I will always love the biggest scare tactic - if you put your children on ritalin, it only makes them take illegal drugs when they are older!

You know I don't think the media can print any truths in regards to ADHD, Aspbergers, etc. They are so ignorant and do not take the time to learn about the disorders.

What a disgrace!

That's why you can't believe everything your read!

I remember a time before my brothers had kids at all, they thought my youngest was a hellion. As time has gone on, they have seen that things are not so simple and I have learned that that no one can understand unless they have a child like mine!!! Keep your head up and know that you are doing the best you can!!  We all are!! But we are are all fighting an uphill battle in a lot of ways. Please keep in in your mind that you are not alone and there are those of us who are here and understand, no matter what the rest of the world says, they still are unaware. Judgement comes swift from those who have had it easier and who could never understand, I believe , anyway. We all have pur 'days', just know that tomorrow will be different, whether good or bad, it will be different.

I just got a good one sent my way, "why don't you spend more time with your kids than being on that web site, as I drink a glass of wine."  1. I spent all day on a feildtrip with my adhd son age10   2. all week for spring break with both the boys taking them skating and just hanging out with them.  I never once had a babysitter or family member take care of my kids.  I have one break this evening they are with my ex for the night.  I think I have the right to get on here, and learn more about my child, than sitting and watching and meaningless movie.  Sorry if I sound angry but my boyfriend who seems to have all the answers, sometimes can be worse than and adhd child.

you know...my hubby had some of those kinds of little comments at first when I started out on this site....he clammed up pretty quickly when I found out about the periactin to stimulate Chase's appetite.....we had been worrying ourselves to pieces for 7 months at that point, wondering just how much weight our little skinny minnie was going to drop, and how long he would stare at his plate of food miserably, unable to force himself to eat a bite......

Then I found out about the tenex(guanfacine), and Chase started on that as well....he is such a changed boy that I haven't heard a comment like that in months from hubby.....

We would still be watching Chase waste away had I not discovered the message board....hubby knows when to keep his mouth shut
Nah, one of my best friends (no kids, mind you) asked me if I really believed in ADD or if it was a result of not being firm enough. She has ALL kinds of advice for me. Lucky me.
Yeah I know my brother does me the same way.. Oh Kim you just need to bust his *** one good time and he'll stop but yet he has him he is going bonkers.. Mind you my son is 9 and in the 9 yrs his been here my brother has watched him MAYBE 5 times..

You get to the point you get tired of busting their butts, unless its a have to why do to? To cause them to get more angry?

Sometimes I'd like these people who don't believe it in to take a kid with ADHD without meds and see how well they handle it.. Video tape them or something to see how they act with a tempered kid pitching a fit because he or she didn't get their way...

Ask your best friend, with all of the "helpful" advise to babysit for an evening. Tell her to be *firm* and see if she doesn't change her opinion on this matter. It has been in the media that ADHD is over-diagnosed. So that makes millions of people skeptical about ADHD. When you say your son or daughter has ADHD, the automatic response is skepticism. I remember feeling the same way before kids! Don't get frustrated with people who are ignorant. They are ignorant but they don't have a clue they are ignorant. Unless one has parented an ADHD, one just can't possibly know how chaotic living with an ADHD child can be.Hence the suggestion for a reality-tv series!! It'd get higher ratings than Survivor and would educate the masses!

YEAH CERTIANLY YOU CAN PUT THEM IN A RIGID ENVIRONMENT LIKE BOYSCHOOL AND THEY EAT UP THE FIRMNESS AND WITH LOCK AND STEP EXCEL.

LET EM OUT AND THEY DONT KNOW WHAT TO DO WITH THIER FEELINGS AND ALL THAT FREEDOM JUST GIVES THE RUNNING ROOM TOO RARE THIER ARMS BACK BEHIND THEM MAKE A FIST AND GO RUNNING IN RAGE TOWARDS SOMETHING AND WHACK

TAPING THAT ANGUISH WHILE HEALTH PROFESSIONAL COULD STEP IN AND MAKE A REAL DIFFERENCE .  IT UNETHICAL.

NO DIFFERENT THAN WATCHING CANNIBALS EAT EACH OTHER FOR RATINGS WHILE THE VIDEO CREW LOOKS ON AT LUNCH TIME EATING A SUB BROADCASTING THE ANGUISH TO WORLD .  ID BE MAD AS HELL IF MY KID WATCHED THAT.

AND ACTUALLY IF YOU WATCH THE NANNY TYPE SHOWS IT IS A SHOW ABOUT A HEALTH WORKER STEPING IN ON KIDS OUT CONTROL AT HOME . WOW SOUNDS LIKE COPS

Sammo39181.2189930556Nah, one of my best friends (no kids, mind you) asked me if I really believed in ADD or if it was a result of not being firm enough. She has ALL kinds of advice for me. Lucky me.My son has gone away for 5 days with my sister - we have never been apart.  It is just fantastic!  As I was driving home with my daughter, I was thinking what would it be like to have 2 normal children?  Okay, so people with ADHDless families say, "all children are difficult at times"  - not like ADHD.  When they are even away at school you worry about them.  The phone rings and I think it maybe the school!  There is always som rubbish to clean up after the world wind goes through the house.  Then it is the arguing etc.   It is difficult and only people who are trapped in this life know the battle.

2X - I know what you mean! Bad parenting my a** (in the words of my so wise father). You are completely right - they have no idea what we go thru on a day to day basis. I have one friend who might be the very sweetest person on earth and I do talk to her alot about my struggles - she's really the ONLY one I am truely open with - and I feel like when we talk it's always about MY problems with my son, so then I feel bad and won't complain for awhile. Even as much as I've told her and as hard as she tries, she still doesn't get it and never will. You can't undrstand until you live it cuz it is sooo personal.

SO WHAT YOU YOU DOING ON THE ADHD BOARD  HAPPYROCK

GET OUT THERE AND TIPTOE IN THEM TULIPS

I am going off to the state capital that is about 600 km  (6 hours driving) but we managed to get some cheap flights! My 16 year old daughter is coming with me for a little bit of retail therapy -  sure makes a changed from any other sort of therapy which we usally spend out money on!!!

It is Easter Monday afternoon and there is not much happening.  The house is quiet - so I am filling in time!!!

Hey, it's no picnic being the ADHD kid, either. Every family has problems--ADHD just happens to be one of ours. Something to be faced together, y'know?

It doesn't help that ADD has been in the news as over diagnosed nor does it help that only the bad outcomes of medication are publicized.

My husband and I were in denial for a while because were victims of the bad press.
