Any ADHD meds ok with Epilepsy? | ADHD Information

I know Stimulants can cause seizures. My 5 1/2 year old daughter has ADHD, SPD and she has had 2 seizures within 2 years (1 Febrile seizure around 4 years old, and the other one on Feb 3rd of this year). We had an EEG it came back normal. They ordered a sleep deprived EEG just because of history (3 y.o. daughter has a Seizure disorder- non medicated) So we did that on March 16th. They said if anything comes back wrong they'll let us know in a week, otherwise it would be 3-4 weeks before we get the results.

Since her first EEG came back normal the Psych gave Strattera... she can't take that, tried Metadate CD 10mg.. heart palpitations from it (EKG was normal) so we stopped that. (before the 2nd EEG)

I suggested short acting Ritalin (we didn't start until a week and 1/2 after the EEG and assumed normal since the never called like they said) at 5mg and she's been doing great on that.. no seizures, no side effects other then I need to make sure she eats good before I give her the meds). She's only taking it once a day in the am for 2 weeks then up to twice a day if she's doing well on it.

However... this evening 3 1/2 weeks after the EEG my Peds' nurse calls and said the EEG was Abnormal... But she couldn't tell me WHAT was abnormal and she was confused too, and didn't know how to classify it. She gave me the name and number to the Neuro down in Richmond at VCU (Children's Neurology Dept). She said he was the one that read both EEGs and to make an appt with him to find out what's going on.

Obviously now I have to stop the Ritalin until after seeing him, but does anyone know, or have a child that has both Epilepsy and ADHD and what meds are given since most of the normal ADHD meds say do not use if you're on an Anti-Seizure meds or have seizures. This just throws me all off since the Ritalin is working well and not causing any seizures. I'm wondering if the EEG picked up her Sensory Dysfunction? I'm lost and worried... of course the Peds' office called me at 5pm and the Neuro's office closed at 4:30 so I have all night to worry until I can make an appt... then even longer to worry until I'm AT the appt.
You might get away with a very low dose of ritalin with guanfacine to augment, or even guanfacine alone (seems to work for some in the shire clin trials). Talk to the doc about your options.I got a copy of her EEG results.. it looks like to me that what it's picking up is her SPD and ADHD. It did not pick up any signs of seizure activity.

I agree with 'vickie'.  Your daughter must be on a lowest dose of RitalinÒ IR (immediate release), which is 5mg.  At this point, Ritalin-SRÒ is not recommended, nor are its cousins and/or generics.  These include Ritalin-LAÒ (long acting) and Metadate-CDÒ (this is now available in 6 dosing strengths from 10mg - 60mg).  Ritalin-LAÒ is only available in 10mg, 20mg and 40mg strength.
