hmmm clonidine is much more sedating than tenex, but it is basically the same thing....I think that the tenex lasts a bit longer....not sure but vickie can tell you more I bet...
. That being said, your son may respond better to the tenex anyway....it is quite inexpensive, the generic- guanfacine- is on the prescription list in the 1mg dosage.
Chase still needs the melatonin to fall asleep maybe one night every 10 days or so.........but sleeps in now whenever possible, like weekends, and before this med, he could stay up till midnight and still pop out of bed at 7 the next morning, now I have to wake him at 10 to give him his meds if he has no school to get up for.
chasesmom7939183.3699884259Tenex is a hypertension drug like clonidine. It is used to treat hyperactivity, impulsiveness, and aggression in ADHD patients. It also helps with sleep. It has worked wonders with my daughter. She goes to sleep at a decent time and she has slept all through the night for about a week and a half. Major improvement. We were getting up as much as 6 times a night. Her aggression has calmed down and she seems to be more like herself. It has been a great combo with the Concerta. Tenex does not help with focus. If focus is a major issue you will have to combine the Tenex with a stim of some sort. Hope this helps. There is also a thread in the ADHD medications board if you would olike to check that out as well.
Both chasesmom and I have gained information from others here. I appreciate the forum and try to give a little back.Exactly, most of what I post, I have learned on these boards or from the year that I have been dealing with the same issues myself. I figure if I can save some other mother and child the difficulties that we faced, I will.....
One thing that helped Chase to eat a better breakfast is to let him have control (within reason) of what he eats. Many times when we ate supper, he picked at the main dish, but the next morning (maybe he thinks about it all night?) it seems to appeal to him and he asks for meatloaf, a hamburger, a chicken drumstick, or whatever....and I warm it up! If it is something he is wanting, he eats a bigger quantity of it. And contrary to popular belief, you don't HAVE to eat ceral or eggs for breakfast! PB & J, leftover pizza, grilled cheese, mac and cheese......as long as it is calories (and not totally empty calories) go for it!
vickies idea of the honey bun as incentive is also a good one, I have done the same thing.
I think I learned more from the mothers here then our doc. My little guys was losing weight and infact had not gained anything in a year or so ...so I took chasesmom advice and talked to our doc about the periactin and within three weeks my ds has gained almost 4 pounds...he is hungry and is enjoying his food again. He is at about 50 pounds now ( thank goodness). I also think this slows him down a bit and I will look into taking him off the stimulant for the summer.
Thanks Chasesmom!
You are sooo welcome! I know that I learned more from moms on this forum than from the doctors! Luckily, once I discover something, the doctor has been open and willing to try it!
One thing to note....after a time on the periactin, the effectiveness seems to slow down...I think that I am going to give Chase a break from it for a week or so, then put him back on to see if it picks up again. I remember during my research on the med, several moms reported the same thing and that a break from it renewed its effectiveness.
Isn't it just the best phrase in the world ("Mom! I am hungry! What do we have to snack on?") after so many months of the poor thing staring miserable at the plate of unfinished food......
I like that idea of slipping the ensure, but my little one is quite cleaver. I will try this though, and I think I will try the honey bun thing too. Thanks Vickie. You always have such good ideas. I enjoy reading the post from you and Chasesmom. You two have lots of good ideas. Thanks to everyone really. You all have been such great cheerleaders. We all need encouragement from time to time. I know I do.
