Adderall, Coffee and OJ | ADHD Information

I never heard that OJ affects Adderall, but this is good to know!

Concerning the coffee, are you talking about the side affects with the caffeine? A year and a half ago, right after I started taking adderall (a few days), I bought a cup of coffee before class. After drinking the coffee, my heart was racing like I just got done running a marathon, I felt very dizzy as well as very tired. I went home from class early, and tried to take a nap on the couch but I couldnt sleep. I just kept fidgeting, it was the weirdest thing I ever experienced. I called my doctor and explained this to him, and he said that I should avoid coffee, as well as other high caffeine items as with the adderall I will become over stimulated.

So over time, I know when a certain amount of caffeine is too much. I switched from coffee to Green Tea, which has little to no caffeine in it. I also only drink caffeine free-diet cola. Since these changes, I have never had this problem again.

I've been on Adderall IR for about a month now. I know they say you're not supposed to consume coffee or orange juice/citrus while taking the meds. Problem is I love my coffee and juice in the morning and it's proving hard to give that up. Is an hour considered enough time before and/or after taking the meds to avoid the absorption blocking? I'd really like to find a way to not have to give up my morning coffee/juice. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks.

I am not sure about the coffee thing...but the juice, well I would say 1-2 hours is safe, though I wait 2 before giving my son any citrus juice....as an adult, you can guage if it is affecting the absorption of the med.

As I understand it, the citric acid in the juice messes with the releasing of the med, using it up more quickly than would happen without the citric acid present in the stomach.

So, do a little experiment and see if the med seems to last longer when you do not drink juice or if the effects are negligible.....it is your body, and you know best what works for you....

I think that is what I read...but I could be wrong.....

Good luck!

Thanks for the suggestion, I'll give it a try. So, it's the citric acid as opposed to the vitamin C that is the culprit?
