Can he type at all?  My oldest hates writing and I am going to bet my youngest is going to be just like him.  My oldest has said since 4th grade he can't write fast enough for his head and it frustrates him.  Some teachers will let a student type instead of write everything.   I would definitely get a 504 or an iep for him if he doesn't have one already.  You can put in these things that will help your son get his work done.  My oldest is getting tests orally because  all they really need to know is if he knows the stuff not that he has to write it down.  Once a person learns to type they can type faster than writing and almost keep up with the fast brain.

Does he have a 504 plan?  If not, it would be a good idea to try to get one.  Usually it's dependant upon how well he's doing on his own.  Having a teacher check the homework book would be an something to put in there.

I've been fighting with my son's teacher all year over this one- she keeps telling him it's his responsibility to bring the book to her to sign.  Kind of a stupid thing to say when the whole reason for doing it is because he can't remember to write it down in the first place.

What other concerns do you have about your son?  How are his grades?  Is he having any behavior problems?  Those are all things to discuss. Make sure the teachers understand what ADHD is, how it affects your son's ability to learn in the classroom and be prepared to offer suggestions on how they can help him do better.

i agree with aarons mom, my son is 4th grade and can type faster than me.  His 3rd grade teacher said this is a great asset and if he wants to type it let him.  I watch him type and i am amazed.  I think if you can find the child strong qualities  that are academic, tell them how amazing it is that they can do that and make sure that the teacher is aware and praise, praise, prase.  All our children are different, and if you can find that niche of satisfaction for your child that YOUR child knows he is good at, then it builds the confidence.  The confidence is the tool that is going to lead the way!

Hi,

I'm meeting with my 4th grade son's teachers.  He has 2 of them.  What sort of questions should I ask of them?  He has problems writing down his homework and I've asked them to check his planner (neither of them do), they think it's his responsibility to learn how to do that.  Anyway, please just give me some advice so I don't walk in there looking stupid.

TIA<
Lisa
