He could be going through rebound which is when the meds DO wear off and it's like they are dropped immediately on the floor, it is pretty tough from what I have learned.
I also want to say that every med does not work for everyone. My son became psychotic on adderall xr. It made his eyes dialated like he was high. they were so red
He freaked out at the doctors office so we took him off it immediately and started concerta. Concerta is best for my son. Just some information to think about.
How did he do today??
My son was the angriest little man on Adderrall XR. Wicked rebound. everyone metabolizes meds a little differently, so what lasts 8 hours for one might only make 6 in another. You can do boosters in the afternoon, if you doc thinks it's a good idea. It's a crap shoot for a while, no doubt about it. Good luck!!Hi and thanks for the replies. Well, it's now day 5 of taking the Adderall XR.
Good luck with the increase next week. If the sleep becomes an issue, ask the dr. about using melatonin. This is a natural supplement, found in the vitamin aisle of most drug stores and at GNC stores and other natural food stores. A very small amount does the trick, as little as 1/2 to 1 mg often is enough to help the child feel drowsy once in bed if given 1/2 hour or so before bed. It will not make the child sedated or make them fall asleep if they are not in bed trying to sleep.
If the adderall works well for behavior and school, and appetite does become a major problem, there are ways to tackle that side effect as well.
Just keep posting, you will learn a ton of info here, as I have!
Intresting to see this post. We are starting aderall xr tomorrow morning. I will keep an eye on this post just to see how it is working for everyone :)
Tho' the makers of Adderall claim something like 10 hour effectiveness, I consistently get only 6 hours. What you describe sounds like rebound to me too. Especiallly when I started on Adderall, the rebound was very noticeable and left me emotional and sensitive--or impatient and easily annoyed! happily, this moderated over time. Everyone's different when it comes to these meds... so your plan for consulting with your son's doctor , plus giving your son lots of support right now, seem right!
Well we had a horrible experience with our Adderal increase! My son has developed a horrible throat clearing tic that is non stop. We are taking him off immediately. Unfortunately it is looking like we have run out of options in the stimulant family. I am a bit scared to try anything else. We had already tried Strattera and that was not successful.
My son also had a horrible time on adderall xr. He was out of his mind on it and the rebound was horrific!
Have you tried concerta? Before you totally give up on stimulants I would try concerta for the sake of your son!
Every med is different for everyone's body, but there is a med out there for everyone. Do you use a psychopharmacologist for his meds? That is what has gotten us where we are, but we still need help at times!
We are going throught trying to make through baseball with the medicine. My son was so over stimulated the other night that my husband is ready to quit taking him. He is 10 and does well all day, except around 7 and his games/practices go till 8. So we are going to talk to the doctor about adding something.
Hang in there!
Beth
There is also the option of low dose stimulant with guanfacine to augment the stim and reduce tics. Look on the tenex thread on the medication board for lots of info on this med.Well we had a horrible experience with our Adderal increase! I would guess that it is leslikely that the 5 mg wore off, but yet he is probably dealing with a bit of a side effect. My son was very tired the first few days, even just on the 5mg, so he could have ben irritable due to that. I would stick to the 5mg, for a week, before you increase, just so taht you can observe his overall effect on the med before complicating things with a higher dose. It can take them a few days to adjust to a med.
