Daytrana side effect Normal?? | ADHD Information

My son is also on 15 a as quiet as a mouse.  He did start with the 10 and had no effect.  He is 10 years old. i don't know is age or weight has any thing to do with the meds.  But 10mgs really didn't do much, if anything.

We have not tried the Daytrana patch, but I will say that when we first started our son on meds (focalin XR) we noticed a lot of increased hyperactivity in the first few days as his little body adjusted to the meds - his teacher said it was like his mind was focused but his body couldn't stop moving.

I would give it a few more days, and if problems persist, it may the the wrong dose/med for him.

I am happy to hear this is not abnormal......My son's class is taking their end of the year big field trip today and it has been a big question mark as to wether he could be able to attend for weeks now due to his behavior.

I am not physically able to make the day long trip with him.  The teacher was worried about his potential  behavior on the trip so when he called from school yesterday around 11 saying my son was talking up a storm not doing his work and could not be still, I asked him to take my son in the office and have him remove and throw away the days patch.  I told him I would observe him in the evening and make the call if I felt he was calm enough to go without a family escort..........I ended up taking my son at 5 :30 this morning to meet the tour bus and did not give him the patch.  I am praying it is all going well.   My son did not go on the big trip last year because of his problems in school and I didn't want to see him miss another.  It is so bad for his self esteem.   Of couse I still have another 3 weeks of school to go and he needs to get back on the patch and the school will need to be patient as it adjusts to his system.  I am so worried about him being gone today and equally as concerned about the next 3 weeks left in school.   He makes good grades if he does the work, the problem is getting him to do the work.  He is a major distraction to the class and I don't know what alternatives remain for him.  I am praying the meds will settle him soon.  If anyone else has had this experience of hyperactivity with the onset of a new med, especially Daytrana, please let me know........the more I hear the more secure I will feel it's the right thing for him.   Thank God for the internet and for you all!

My ds just started the 10 mg patch.  The first few days he was very talkative, but it was a lot more detailed.  For instance, he and I talked about Star Was (his favorite subject) for over an hour; what he liked about this and that, it would be cool if...., they should of ........ .  Before he would just babble on and not make much since.  Now it seems that his thoughts are clear and he is able to convey them, which is great.  He is still a little hyper, so I will probably go up on the medicine to 15 mg.

Now we are on day 12 and he isn't talking as much as he was in the beginning.

HTH!

Is it normal for my son who has been on Daytrana patch 10 mg. for 4 days now to be so hyper and talkative. This is more  than normal without the medication.  Will this go away as he gets used to the medication? I just had a call from the teacher and we noticed it all weekend at home.  Should this get better or should it not be happening at all?  Help please

Yes, andio65.  I had the same experience when I started my son on the 10 patch.  Unbelievable chatterbox for the first few days.  It quieted down pretty quickly though.  Wait another week or so.

Good luck.

My son too is on Daytrana...He is much calmer on the meds.

I will say that the first dose was not enough....15mg.  It was like he was not on any meds at all.  I was told to up the meds and he now takes 1--15mg patch and 1/2 of 15 mg patch.  (so 22.5 mg)  The doctor thought that since this worked, that trying 20 mg was not worth it.  I increased the patch steadily over a week.  The only side effects we have seen are sleeping and loss of appetite.  i would increase the dose and see if that helps.
