My son is 10 and is in a special ed. classroom the first part of his day. He takes 5 mg. of dexedrine at 7 a.m., 5 mg. at 10:15 a.m. , and 5 mg. at 1:15 p.m. We recently switched his 1:15 pm dose to 11:55 am due to him acting up in the afternoon class beginning at 1 pm. His teacher told me that when they gave him the early dose today, he was very wild and out of control for the first 30 minutes, then calmed down. I have a call into the doc, but was wondering if there were any suggestions or opinions about taking the dose about 1 1/2 hours early? The other option is to give him 10 mg. at 10:15, then the normal 5 mg at 1:15 p.m.
Sorry this is so confusing, but I am at a loss.
Have you tried the tricks for learning to swallow a pill? You can start with mini m & ms, and once he can swallow those (it is easier to try because they taste good if you fail...), he can graduate to regular m & ms, then tic tacs....and so on...others have used tiny pieces of pretzels broken to resemble a pill size for practice.
Also, before my son could swallow pills, he got a capsule as large as a 250mg amoxicillan capsule down by me sitting it on top of a big spoonful of pudding or yogurt, then scooping the whole thing in, in one swoop. Tell him to just swallow the pudding....the capsule goes down too.
There are long acting meds that can be sprinkled, but I am unsure if dexdrine spansules is one of them....it is important with most of them that they not be chewed, just swallowed....adderall xr is one as is ritalin LA. My son takes ritalin LA and it works great for him...but he can swallow pills now...
i have my son open his mouth really wide and stick his tongue out, then i toss it in the back of his throat and he immediately will drink water with it. He has been swallowing pills since he was 3 1/2 years old. After a couple of times he got used to it. have you tried the dexedrine extended release capsule yet? It last with my son anywhere from 10 to 12 hours. My son has problems swallowing capsules. Any suggestions?
