Well, we are searching for a new psychologist because the one we have is just not the right fit.
Although he has effected some positive things - 504 plan, diagnosis - there is no therapy going on and my son just doesn't like him. There are other issues to.
So, now I have to find a new one. My friend, who is a nurse, gave me a list of therapists her practice uses. They are psychiatrists.
My pediatrician is useless. He doesn't have any and they just gave me the same list as the last time which are social workers.
I do have some additional names that the school gave me.
So, opinions - my son isn't on meds yet because we are still waiting for the neuropsycholigical test - good news - they got my forms and they will give me an appt. in 6 months.
In the mean time, I want to have a new therapist set up before he takes the test and I want to establish some kind of relationship before the next year.
Any experiences you wish you share?
Thanks.
Thanks Vikie - well, since our son is not on meds yet and we still don't have the confirmation diagnosis from the test, we will look for a psychologist. My pediatrician will be able to manage meds.
I got the name of a psychologist that a friend of my sister uses and likes. So, that is good but I have to hope they are taking new patients.
Anyone who has been searching for new therapists get burned out by going over and over the same story?
Psychiatrists are best for med managment and some provide therapy outside of meds. Psychologist would be strickly therapy. If you get one that is part of a child development practice, you will have access to all the parts (therapy, coaching, med managment if needed, etc).
