Help with daughter, taking a pill | ADHD Information

Have you already done the free card for the free patches?  I have read about a card that doctors have....or the company provides...I think it is for 40 patches....but I am not sure if you can do it more than once if you already have used it once.

Talk to you doctor about getting samples.  Drug reps bring samples to doctors by the box full.  Explain your situation to the doctor maybe they would help.

Good morning!

My daughter started her meds by taking Concerta BUT it was such a hassel in the morning to get her to take a pill. I had to put it in ice cream or a fudge bar, then stand with her for almost 10 minutes and watch her "prepare" herself to swallow the pill. She would get herself all worked up about taking this pill. I don't believe it's because it's medicine, she still takes liquid tylenol. We switched her to the 15 mg Daytrana patches adn it's been GREAT! Just put the patch on and go.

Here is my dilema. I only need 20 patches to get through the end of school. That is still going to cost me over 0! I am really tight financially, my husband and I have just seperated and not getting ANY $$ from him. I have exactly 20 Concerta pills left from when she took them at the begining of the school year. How can I SOMEHOW convince her to take this pill for 20 days? Does anyone have any suggestions??

Thanks

Have you tried an incentive?  You don't say how old she is...would she be motivated by money?  Perhaps a day out with mom for lunch and a movie after school is done.....

My son had trouble swallowing pills at first, and I found that if I would plop it atop a heaping spoonful of pudding or yogurt and have him open wide to let ME scoop it into his mouth, he could swallow that spoonful, pill and all, no problem.  It just slid right down.

Find the right incentive...maybe have her tell you what she wants for a treat, tell her that if she can take the pill within a 10 minute period each morning, she will get something small....(to keep her going until the final goal) and once school is out, she will get the big goal.

Good luck!

She is 8

I'm hoping I can find something to help her get through this. There are only 20 days left! I just don't have the extra 0 for the patches right now and it sucks!

I had to psych my gs out to take his concerta.  He was a gagger.  Since I have meds to take in the AM, too, I play acted that I couldn't take them.  I commented that the doctor told me to place them on the tip of my tongue and not father back[and that I didn't believe it]. Then I took my meds and made a big deal of how easily it went down.  Then I told my gs how sad it was that he couldn't swallow meds as this was a really neat trick.  Of course, he had to prove me wrong.  He took his concerta that way to prove that he could do it, too.  No problems since..My 5 1/2 year old has to take 2 different pills. One for seizures (which are dissolvable (sp?) but NASTY tasting so she chooses to swallow them) the other is her Ritalin.. Thankfully they're both rather small. However, what I have her do is take a good size drink of water, fill her mouth and put the pill in and swallow fast.. then take another drink to wash it down and repeat for the 2nd pill.

Yeah, no samples of stimulant meds.. the closest thing is some have vouchers with a prescription (like the Focalin XR I just got today, was for free trial of 30 pills). If you can't get her to swallow those, talk to her Dr and see if there are anything like that in a med she can tolerate.

I don't believe you can get ANY samples of the stimulant meds.  They are controlled substances.....other meds it is true, one can usually get samples, not ADHD meds....

The only way to get them is with a prescription....
