New face-touching tic with Ritalin LA | ADHD Information

Hello,

My son has had tics since he was three. The medicine Concerta 27ml. made it alot worse. My son without meds would smell his fingers and his nose would be black by the end of the day (this is just one of many through the years). It seems when the right medicine is found those tics you are seeing will probably go away. Good luck on your search. We are still looking for the right combo too. It is not easy, but I think it will be worth it if we find the right med. and dose. I think his ADHD is starting to effect him socially now and that is a hard thing to watch.

My dd also developed a "weird behavior" when on 40-50 mg of Ritalin LA. She was picking at her fingers and her hair. She actually was very concentrated on doing those things, but not listening to the teacher! I was at my wits end at that time. Finally, we added tenex, which enabled us to lower the Ritalin LA to 20 mg. No more tics.As cr12345mr said, guanfacine (Tenex) can be used for some ADHD symptoms (allowing you to lower the stim dose) and to treat tics. It also helps with defiance, the times the stim is not in the system and sleep issues. Look for the long Tenex thread for lots of info on this med. You can print it to open the discussion with the doc.We are on the med roller coaster--started w/Daytrana but had to stop b/c of rash, Ritalin LA, have gone from 10 to 50 without good results.  We're now waiting for the stupid insurance co. to approve a switch to Dexadrine.  My son recently has had an increase in a behavior that I am just now realizing might be a tic.  When he goes off his meds and is tired at night he touches his face.  He always used to be obsessed w/putting his hands down his pants when tired, but recently really has stepped up the face touching.  He was doing it so much during soccer practice that his face was covered in dirt.  I feel so bad for my little guy.  I haven't read anything about tics and ADHD, so I was just looking for others to comment who have had a similar experience.  Thanks!
