new to boards | ADHD Information

Hi! I'm new to all of this. My son is being evaluated for ADHD. He is almost six (in about 2 weeks) We have had a very difficult time with him.  Especially during the toddler years. It is nice to know there is a reason for all his outbursts and behaviors. We knew he was a Spirited Child but now we also believe he has ADHD.  I'm a 2nd grade teacher and my son is in K at our school. He is having a terrible time getting his work finished and beginning to have emotional stress. I have spoken with the teacher and have tried many things. I have researched myself to death. All my reading has helped somewhat at home. my son is always being blamed for everything by his aunt and grandparents. My nephew is 6ths older and the golden child. Luckliy, my inlaws adore my son and accept him for who he is.  Sorry this is so long. It's nice to finally talk with others who truly know what I'm going through. i'm sure I'll be back with more questions. Thanks for listening! Welcome, and good luck through the diagnostic process. It will be nice to have a diagnosis so you can explore your posible options.I would like to say welcome.  My son was diagnosed recently and I have found a lot of help and support here.

Welcome Pineymom2.  I know exactlly what you are going through.  My sons' Kindergarten teacher tried many things to keep him on task and I was unwilling to accept that he might have a problem.  By first grade he was completely behind in task completion and constantly saying that he was not "smart like everybody else".  It was heartbreaking, but it forced me to re-consider my opinions regarding ADD and medicating children.  He has been on the Daytrana patch since January and the difference is huge.  Good work completion and a whole new confidence level.

Good luck to you.  I know you will find these boards to be a great source of information and comfort.

Hi and welcome. We have all been there. Have you thought of getting your son an IEP? Also, down the road, maybe meds would help him with his schoolwork. 1st grade was an absolute nightmare for dd. After adding a stim, things got MUCH better with school. Of course meds have their downside too. Good luck and keep in touch!
